Been biting my tongue for a long while, but something about the way simfiles are handled here that is bothering me.
Seems like at least one pack of songs for older mixes (pre-X-difficulty-scale) (MAYBE more? I need to check carefully) have been given the DDR X difficulty scale ratings. DDR SuperNOVA AC's simfiles being one example off the top of my head.
I really hope I don't come off as a total cuntwaffle or anything. Again, this has been bugging me for a LONG while, but shouldn't they have the difficulty ratings and scales of the song they were released from, which seemed to be the modus operandi for practically forever?

If I’m understanding your complaint correctly, all songs with X Scale ratings in the simfiles have one officially, with a couple exceptions. Like, Un Deux Trois has an X Scale rating for its Beginner - Expert charts but the Challenge chart is Xbox only so it was given a custom one for uniformity. Otherwise all SN1 songs with an X Scale rating have them because they were present in DDR X AC.

Reasonable question.
Unfortunately, with this logic, you come across the problem where songs have been given new

Times have changed. It's no longer ye olden days of DDRUK. Official simfiles now are much more accurate to arcade data than the manual conversions in the past.

IDK it feels kind of hollow a reason - times changing = people still like to play and simulate older mixes, Not to mention that I could makek an argument for accuracy with regards to the songs being presented the way they are for the respective mixes - people still probably want to get the simfiles as they were. Maybe there should be packs with songs using the scale they had upon release, and packs where the songs all have their DDR X scale adjustment...
I'd also say that a data preservation argument could be made - not everything gets archived by the likes of archive.org even in this day and age.

It’s not a bad idea since the DDRUK downloads are gone now. There is a thread here where someone went back and restored the old ratings if you want that, but it’s not as high profile as the hosted simfiles for sure.
From a coding stand point, how difficult would it be to make the simfiles here generate a .sm file with the respective difficulty level on the fly? I know next to nothing about this kind of stuff, maybe no one had the idea or maybe it’s just an unreasonable question. But like instead of having the one listed set of difficulties on the page, list classic and modern for any simfile that has both. Then since the zips are generated on the fly already have part of that process be to put the correct rating into the .sm file when someone clicks the classic or modern zip button. Songs released from DDR X and onwards would only have one button, songs that never appeared in DDR X or later would only have one as well. The mainline songs would get priority for this, but eventually it could include songs shared in X2 and Hottest Party 3, and songs that were in Universe 3 and X2, and what not.

Yeah, it'd be really nice if the .sm file format would just let you list two ratings, one for each scale. (And then the program consuming it decides what to do with cases where the "right" rating isn't there, probably just a simple table for conversion.) But unfortunately, that's not how the file format is set up. It wouldn't be hard to have a copy with the other rating, but I don't think that the system here is set up to generate anything, so if someone fixed a problem in one copy, or added a new challenge chart, or whatever, the other wouldn't be automatically updated. I could be wrong though.
(I like to play old, old songs, and I play six-panel, which never left the 10-foot scale, and I like the old interfaces.)

Honestly, I cannot imagine it being that difficult to make a script that alters the raw text for the file being downloaded so the difficulties are taylored to the user's wants (wanting X scale, pre-X scale, whatever) IF it generated SM files at least (which I suspect it doesn't).
Still, IMO some of the apathy or dismissal of concern expressed by others over the older simfiles/ratings and maintaining availability is disturbing (moreso from a preservation standpoint heh).

I think I phrased it poorly when I said "generate a .sm file". I was thinking more like a .sm file is provided by someone responsible for the category (whoever that is for the officials, and the owners of the user categories) and Zenius (the website itself) has some kind of script that finds, like the way the difficulties are laid out in the simfile at the top of the chart and plugs in the appropriate mode's difficulty from the provided difficulties. Like when you go to Make It Better (first one I pulled up as the first song in the 1st category) it lists the difficulties for singles and doubles and we just have to know it's X scale. Have the option to set two sets of difficulties, Classic and X, and it pulls from that to fill in the provided .sm file for the user. Zips are done on the fly now, so I know some effort has been put in to automate things, but this might be a bit harder one to do because the website has to interface with the uploaded .sm file for it to work.
