I honestly think its a stupid idea. Al put in the check mark system for a reason. If someone is annoying you just uncheck their name. If its too much then leave and comeback later or don't come back. Common sense.
Can we lock this thread, thank you.

Haven't we already established that that barely works, anyway? I know you want to look big and mature by saying "lock this thread", but still.

He can ask to lock this thread just like you can ask to be a chat mod.

T'was a joke, Aegis. I'm 110% aware that chat mods aren't going to be things.

Unchecking people is a terrible system and creates confusion.

Unchecking wouldn't be so bad if there was any indication at all that someone has unchecked someone else. I know I personally would prefer knowing upfront that person X won't see my messages instead of having to probe for it in the chat.

Unchecking people is a terrible system and creates confusion.
This, I'm inclined to agree with. It's not quite like muting another user, it's more like simply putting earmuffs over that user's messages. Like Silver Spirit pointed out, you can only speculate if someone unchecked you. Because you don't know if you've been unchecked by someone (whether or not by accident), you can't ask that user what you did wrong or why they chose to ignore you. The unchecked user therefore has no incentive nor opportunity to fix his or her conduct in the chat, and will likely continue. So what exactly creates confusion in all this? First, it creates confusion for other users in the chat. Because no one knows who unchecked who, users that unchecked each other are likely to talk over each other, in the same potentially problematic way prior to being unchecked. They are unlikely to report each other as well, because they aren't sure of what's happening since they cannot read each other's messages. It's difficult for users who just joined the chat to know what the whole picture of the conversation is like when we have users who just talk over each other.
Second, it creates confusion for a user with unchecks if another user is conversing with that unchecked user. If UserA unchecks UserB, and UserC's messages are mainly directed to UserB, UserC's messages will be impossible to decipher for UserA, unless he/she re-checks UserB. This is even more true when several users are actively chatting at once.
Because of these shortcomings, while the unchecking system exists, very few of us find it useful and make any use of it at all. Just my two cents.
As for a solution, I believe PMing an admin or moderator about a chat issue works just fine, as AnonyWolf suggested. Things usually calm down by then, so there really isn't a need for constant invigilation. I do see some merit in the idea of separate chat rooms, though; this makes it easy for people to find sufficient quiet space to hold their conversations without getting in the way of others. Thanks for reading!

Okay, I understand. I wasn't around when you tried that so I was merely putting out a thought.

Oh, it was Alan, and I think it actually was 2013. He took most of the brunt for it, anyway,

I did register on this site in 2013 since a friend of mine invited me, but I wasn't active at all. I left after the first day and only came back just a little over 1 year ago. Did not even know you had a chat on this site then. But good to know!

The chat was created 26th July 2009. The first post was Alan saying hello world, and within three posts, I had called him a bitch.

I think separate chat room could work if it were done in a much better way than Friendly Chat was. Nobody needs to be barred from any of the rooms, just separate rooms so conversations can be redirected and stuff rather than all be in the same area.

The chat here is cancer, which is unfortunate, because it's usually the quickest way to get new information. Every time I have jumped into a conversation it was just a bunch of people badmouthing forum goers who don't frequent chat. The best way to avoid the drama is just to avoid it and let the people there have their "fun". As long as it doesn't start seeping into the regular forums everything should be fine.

Wow, that's unfortunate. I'm sorry if you've been vicitimized. We're really not all like that...
