Believe me, because:

You're almost definitely not going to be able to do this in 3.9...

Hmm if I did the theme in SM5 then it would be only in 4;3 which is fine though lol but I would still have difficulties trying to do the wheel

Disadvantage of any SM3.9 variants over MusicWheel:
You can't control the offset distance between the first item (left and right) to center.

I think this is why I recall previous attempts on 3.9 not getting very far, in fact I think they tried making a standard adaptation of the music wheel instead, though again I don't recall the theme getting all that far.
I also agree on 3.9 probably being better for 4:3 themes, though it might be interesting to see them adapted for 16:9, even if that means it just being centred.
Do you have a copy of the select music background graphic I could possibly have a look at?

Warning: Terrible mockup ahead.
This is my attempt at mocking up a widescreen version of the select music screen background for SM5 (linked due to forum size constraints).
I did try to continue the effect of the middle and lower front frames, like how the top part is, but I lack the necessary skill to accomplish this.

What's up with everyone trying to steer him away from using 3.9? I still proudly support it...

I was wondering the same thing, but I didn't want to get in the way of someone pushing SM5 every time kenny makes a post.

yeah this wasn't the first time someone had bitched to another user about using 3.9 and using MS Paint. But I'm not going back there.
OH GOD Xavious' mock-up is even more uglier. *goes to the bathroom to hurl* why Konami, why? I'm glad your dead, but must you haunt us from beyond the grave.

Well I did. Specifically, if someone were to make a DDR Extreme USA simulation, like beware's arcade Extreme.
One thing I noticed is that they let the background movie system derail... for the most part, you can't rewind movies, resulting in messy scripts.... To me (and probably others), that's pretty flawed. I don't think making a copy for every repeat of a movie sits well with me. Also, all of the speed changes are incompatible (beware might as well have made all of his movies 30fps for Stepmania 5)... I don't like Stepmania 5's background movie engine.

Honestly, that mockup is as good as the EXTREME US song select background is gonna get. It's a boring header with a blue-gradient spotlight that cuts off two thirds down. How can you complain about 'it looking uglier'? It never looked good anyway.

I apologise for assaulting people's eyes; that was never my intent. I was curious how the game might look adapted into widescreen, mostly to see how it might end up looking if adapted for SM5, as that might be required to get the music wheel working.

The mockup looks fine, Extreme USA never had the best interface and I think bmhedgehog was just using a weird type of humor.

He must've been, he said Konami is dead. Again.
