The sound director of this game died after this release no? If he were still alive, do you think he would have kept his spot?
I don't play simulators. Only the real official games.

I think so, and I think we would have seen a lot more of the songs from the 2009 master list get released on X2 instead of spread out over the years.

Also, I still wonder if the theme used in X2 PS2 would have been used for X2 AC, and what was originally used for DDR 2010 would have remained there.

There is a lot of glaring flaws why DDR X gets a lot of rightful hate: the cabinet/pads, the announcer, the UI and crappy shock arrow charts.

Musically, I find it to be the worst of post SN2 mixes but that's not to say it's terrible, merely mediocre. The "urban" UI and songs are just not that great. I applaud Konami for taking a risk on this mix but it's not one of the better ones.

The game itself is fine. People act like it's Satan incarnate but the songlist is mostly solid, and the screen filter was a very useful new feature. Most of the issues could have been avoided by offering upgrade kits to machines running SN2, but ya know, Betson.

I really like most of the stuff in X aside from the X-special charts... most of those are awful. Tons of good songs with good charts and lots of good revivals. I'd love to have a decent machine (non-betson/raw-thrills) to play it on. Unfortunately that will probably never happen.

The announcerS are annoying, then. When do they even switch? I don't think I even heard two different guys.

Approximately nobody asked for this song to be included. Least popular decision by the Japanese since Nintendo released the Wii U.

At the risk of repeating everybody in this thread, it sort of depends on how you define X.

NA's console version was all right for getting us the planet songs and a few others we missed out on from SN2. Street Master Mode is the greatest thing to happen ever... if... you're into subtle references to the old bios of veteran characters and cheesy dance battle "plot." If you're not, well, at least it was kind of easy and you could always play the fudge out of the song list and ignore SMM altogether ... killjoy. ;P

The arcade cabinet looked effing glorious. At least, the Japanese one did. As already said, the blame pretty much goes to Betson for tainting it elsewhere. But the first sight of those wonderful lights and the new arrows on the Japanese site was so lovely. *_* Even the one time I played a Betson cabinet, the HD screen was so prettyyyy even if nothing else was. xP

I love the announcers... in between songs. Hardly ever play with them on, and sometimes I forget there's a reason for that. Tongue They're silly, just... could be more brief when actually playing.

Um. Iono, maybe I tuned out the hate X got. : D... Even after these posts, still in stubborn disbelief you can hate a game that tried to be new, shiny and different, even if the theme was ehhh. Unless you're judging it by bad manufacturers which... seems unfair? o_o;

It is pretty fair if the bad manufacturing makes it basically unplayable without some form of modification.

The cabinet is horrible. Betson fucked the machine beyond belief.

However, as just standalone software, it's a solid mix. IMO, it has a solid song list and a nice theme. The transition to widescreen was smooth, minus some lag (although that may have been a machine problem, I haven't done my research). Although the announcers were annoying as fuck. But hey, at least we got a screen filter!

I don't understand the argument of "solid songlist". It had arguably the worst songlist of any mix. On The Break, on the bounce, Loving You (Epidemik Remix), and Waiting 4 U are the only songs from X I'll ever choose to play. And the others are just awful. Lift You Up?

But I thought that was only the non-Japanese cabinets? And somehow, weren't people able to get upgrade kits to play on other machines, so the game itself is sort of a different entity, imo...?

... well, I never use it, but it's still super neat. And isn't this the first mix with the extra speed mods (2.5x notably)?

I don't know why but when X3 was released, I'd play X over X2. Kinda weird since I don't like the Xmixes to begin with.

Maybe it's because I can pick characters and Lady is there??? Or maybe it's because SN and SN2 licenses are still present??? Songlist is actually cool but I hate Lift You Up and most of the Shock Arrow charts.

Yes, but in general, X machines not made by Betson/Raw Thrills are hard to come by in America. They exist, but since the majority of X machines in the U.S. are in places like Dave and Buster's, you're really not going to have an easy time finding them. You can mod the pads to be reasonably functional (here and here) but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect it work right out of the box.

There are a lot of really boring options on the list (Lift You Up, Tracers [whatever remix], all that Jena Rose crap) but my question is, are you counting the revivals from previous mixes? Those are really what make it solid, IMO. And I also love all of Darwin's stuff (On The Break is probably my least favorite of his, actually).

EDIT: To be fair, I mostly agree with you about having the worst songlist of any mix. That is, if we cancel out 1st mix and 2nd mix, due to those games having like 25 songs combined or something idk. I'd rather play pretty much any version after 3rd mix. Especially 4th Mix Plus, X2, 2013 or maybe 5th Mix if I can find one anywhere.

Wolfram Alber is a real good musician who looks to have had a good time working with the late sound director. The song they did is pretty lousy I admit but too many only know wolli from that awful song which is a shame. His songs in beatmania IIDX 17 SIRIUS and pop'n music 19 TUNE STREET were much better. Great duos with the lovely Yoko Aramaki. Outside of BEMANI he's a good musician. By the way, I wonder, is he half German?
