Or a good bundle pad to get started.
It's kind of stupid to learn Beginner and Light in the arcade when that money could be spent toward a bundle mat and a game of your choice and freeplay all day.

What Aegis said.
Although I'd not recommend to purchase any mid-high tier dance pads, because they're usually not worth the price. All of the top tier italian ITG players only play on arcade pads.

I recommend metal pads from home use because it resembles the one on arcade and it's not as "slippery" as dance mats. Remember, not all of the people who have dance mats can come up with the idea on sticking it to the floor with tapes like Kon's 888
video.

The first release to use holds on the Beginner difficulty was Extreme 2. The revived licenses that first received Beginner charts in that version have holds there, which is funny since the legacy charts (obviously) have none.

I've spotted some in Step On in Unleashed 2. As did a couple of the licences in Festival.

They're a great idea when done well. My beginner/light charts have healthy amounts of freezes to encourage moving from pad to pad.

I think Festival was the 1st to have them. They did not put in freezes in Extreme because freezes where somewhat new at the time. Now is so common in the games today.

Just checked.
DDR Festival was the first DDR game released that has Freeze Arrows in Beginner charts. About half of the new songs in that mix contain Freezes on Beginner. However the American release of EXTREME nor any version of DS Fusion have them. DDR ULTRAMIX 2, released on the same day as Festival, also does not have any Freezes in its Beginner charts (On Single or Double).

The EU version of Ultramix 2 DOES have freezes, but I don't know how many songs do. It's at least one though.

The new songs in Unleashed 2 do not have Freeze Arrows in Beginner (at least according to this site's database). Other than that the game is an exact copy of ULTRAMIX 2, which also doesn't have Freezes on Beginner.
On a related note, Unleashed 2 was released closely with DDR with Mario. No Freezes in Beginner here either, but there are eighth notes. :V

Hmm, my SM for Step On has two freezes in. If could get to my Xbox, I'd check.

My thoughts on the purpose of Freeze arrows in Beginner: "Get the F*** off the center!"
I totally agree with this. I have a bundle, and whenever someone new plays, I'm like, GET OFF THE CENTER, and get your feet on L and R. It just helps you so much. All charts should do that.Post #34 · Posted at 2011-07-22 09:03:44am 13.9 years ago

I guess it's good for freeze arrows to be on beginner. I'm slow on the uptake, so I got a lot of NGs on my first playthroughs of Hottest Party 1. 8D;

More interesting is the fact that Beginner charts are beginning to resemble easy light charts, with steps that discourage you from staying on the center o.O
Also I'm pretty sure the early freeze charts had a wide enough gap between the freezes so that you could return to the center anyway. Obviously, around X/X2 they stopped caring about that and modified the charts a lot, but still
