Why are you guys having a debate about if the PSN is free or not? If it worries you that much, e-mail Sony and ask them. The price obviously doesn't come from the games since the prices are the same for multi-platforms and adding to the price of exclusives would just be redundant because most multiplatforms are the popular online games such as COD. Also, the price COULD have been included in the cost of the actual system, but even then that seems a tad redundant. Sony probably just expects their money from players who wish to buy DLC, etc.

The debate may be pointless, but debates in general are healthy even if they are redundant.
X360 new game = $60 for a DVD + cost for ONLINE
Wii same game = $50 for a DVD free ONLINE
PS3 same game = $60 for a BluRay free ONLINE
Why does the Xbox game cost more than the Wii version? The main factor in the price is maximizing profits.
PSN is paid for from DLC, Rentals, and other paid content, and I dare say from the price of the system. If it was a money waster Sony would not support it, but because it does so well it's expanded on continuously. Some games even have DLC that provide network multiplayer support.
A game such as Warhawk which is PSN ONLY and has no single player content is worth $0 without PSN, thus when you buy it you are paying money to Sony based on their ability to provide PSN. Is PSN free to access? Yes. Would you have given money to Sony for Warhawk without it? No. Did you basically just pay for PSN access? Yes.

Whether we do indirectly pay for PSN isn't the topic at hand anyway. Plus, there's no solid evidence so everyone could be wrong on the situation.
PSN not coming back until end of May is really pushing it a little.

PSN and XBox Live are paid for entirely by game publishers. In order to upload a demo / patch / DLC pack to the servers, the publisher has to pay a fee. Whenever someone downloads the file, the publisher of the file has to pay a flat rate for the bandwidth used.
When a game has online play, the games companies either put up their own servers, and pay per gigabyte to have those servers linked to the PSN/XBox servers, or they pay a higher rate to have Sony's servers deal with everything.
The reason XBox Live still costs a premium is because it has bandwidth costs which aren't associated with any specific game, like cross-game voice chat.

You don't need PSN to work on your GT5 and LBP2 trophies, buddy.
I'm just sad that the RB DLC won't be up as soon as the PSN is up. Harmonix would have to resend the files for testing. It also sucks that they were releasing 10RBN songs to make up for the absence of it for the launch of RBN2.0. Companies are allowed so many slots for DLC, so I'm left wondering how many songs we'll get per week until it catches up with the 360

I could care less about trophies. I'd rather be able to access the store for new content.

I would like to make a correction here.
XBL has 2 levels of access the free subscription and the gold subscription.
the free subscription is just that its free use of XBL, but you would have to pay for any DLC you purchase.
the gold subscription allows you to do more than the free subscription for example the use Matchmaking in games like Halo and COD.
I hope this clears up a few things.

In my opinion there should be 3 levels of Xbox membership
Silver: Access to the marketplace
Gold: Online gameplay with a few apps such as Avatar Kinect, party chats, Netflix, etc
Platinum: What Xbox Gold is today
Why should I pay $60 a year because of all of the extras such as Hulu, Facebook, ESPN, Last.FM, etc that I don't even use on the Xbox which I can use on the computer?

Sony is going for another ride again as SonyPictures.com is hacked...
Detailed news: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/02/sony-pictures-hacked-lulzsec_n_870615.html

The same hackers who recently attacked PBS.org have turned their attention back to Sony by releasing the latest dump of information stolen from Sony's websites.
While the information disclosed includes approximately 150,000 records, the hackers claim the databases exposed contain over 4.5 million records, at least a million of which include user information.
The data stolen includes:
* A link to a vulnerable sonypictures.com webpage.
* 12,500 users related to Auto Trader (Contest entrants?) including birth dates, addresses, email addresses, full names, plain text passwords, user IDs and phone numbers.
* 21,000 IDs associated with a DB table labeled "BEAUTY_USERS" including email addresses and plain text passwords.
* ~20,000 Sony Music coupons (out of 3.5 million in the DB).
* Just under 18,000 emails and plain text passwords from a Seinfeld "Del Boca" sweepstakes.
* Over 65,000 Sony Music codes.
* Several other tables including those from Sony BMG in The Netherlands and Belgium.

Who would trust Sony with their personal information now?
