because you need grip for doubles play. If you have slippery shoes, you will slide off the side of a pad because of the momentum. Slippery shoes means that you will shift the weight to your ankles to stop yourself and that can actually harm your legs. The gripis used to help in stopping the momentum.
Speaking from personal experience, anyway.

Truth right there. Plus, if you don't use the bar and you do high speed cross overs, you're putting a lot of forward force on your feet and no grip means slipping and slipping means twisted ankles. I don't really get why anyone would want to "slide" around on streams personally.

Personal opinion from a Pump and DDR player,
Went through a pair of Nike running shoes in 3-4 months at a cost of $100+ (pitiful), Puma's were very uncomfortable for mainly Crazy/Heavy/Oni play (also not flat footed*), but, tried out some Skechers "back in the day" and had a pair last for a grand total of 3 YEARS. I've only had to go through 2 pairs ever since realizing they were my favorite brand for comfort and speed (also a non-bar player btw*). See what they can do in action for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mO7vqFNp4xg

As long as those shoes are sport shoes, those will do. Although there are some shoes that are kinda slippery.
For stamina, practice merciless stepcharts such as Max 300, Cartoon Heroes (Speedy Mix) and Waka Laka.

*** THIS IS MY 100th POST ON ZIV ***
I used it to argue about shoes :{
I 'd rather slide than grip on high speed crossovers. If you're playing without the bar and at that sort of level, then you should be able to control the momentum of the slide, and be aware enough of your centre of gravity that you can't overshoot the mark.
When you get to shit like Canon on Crazy, you don't have much choice. You either slide, or you bar-rape, lifting your foot off the panel takes too long :{

To tell you the truth I honestly don't remember X_X, just try Zappo's or your local sporting goods store, find a pair that you think looks nice and feels comfortable, give it some time to break in (few weeks/months, depending on how much/often you play*), and after that it's smooth sailing =). But, I will say this though, a friend of mine is great at doubles and he uses Puma's, they really help with gliding but they KILL your feet on runs.

Very true X_X, what's really fun is No Despair (full version) and since I don't touch the bar oh, is it "FUN".

I use my Skechers for playing, and pretty much everything else. They're sport ones, and the lightest I have. Not too much grip, but enough.
As for stamina, I use a mixture of hard and easier songs, and then I can keep going longer. I put some fast moving in only occasionally on a long session, it's awkward for my legs.

I hear that =), I like to start things off with a warm up, harder song, around the same lines as the second song if not more difficult, then always finish with a CRAZY Crazy song, or a 10 all depending of course =P. Never hurts to throw in an easy Crazy song to catch some breath from time to time =).

Good suggestions from everyone, I'm going to check out these shoes you all have suggested. I did a few of the suggestions for stamina building and so far so good. Leg weights take a bit to get used too but it seems to help. I also did the do a 6 foot, then 7 etc but then I pick random on final to get the two extra stages. Again thank you all for taking the time to help me out with this, I appreciate it.
What do you all think of the Reebok Zigtechs? I know they have a couple different styles. I was just wondering about them as well.
