Considering the game is free, and you can get all the songs you want for free, it feels a bit silly to have to shell out to make the game look a bit prettier.
From what everyone's told me at events I've done, they want to get a hold of the themes I've made; in fact, I've had many offer to pay over $100 one right then and there so I'm curious about the market that's against purchasing themes because a free game makes it easier to pay for things.
That's other people. This is me. And I'm quite fine with Cyberia style 6, thank you very much.

Paying for themes doesn't sound good to me. Most of the time when a new cool theme comes out, I switch to it use it for a couple of days then switch back to my previous one.
This is information that we'll need to consider.

anyone else in here thinks that this is a really really bad idea and that Mr. Saturn2888 is just wasting his time on delusions of grandeur. The majority here has spoken against this idea, I'd say we close this thread before this continues.

It's not a bad idea, but it isn't a good one either. And it can't be a delusion if people have paid him before. And the majority never speaks for all.

One thing I want to mention though:

I do not know who mr.saturn* is, so I find it odd for him to bring up an idea without showing previous work. Simply put, I've never heard of him and I'd like to see his work. Big Grin

So Saturn, I looked at the link in your signature.

It appears you have a business that offers some kind of DanceDanceRevolution simulation game (I'm guessing you're using Stepmania with a custom theme) for rent at events. I also happened to note from some of your pictures that your game uses not only fanmixes like DWI Extreme and DDR Encore that are offered for FREE online (that actually use songs without permission from Konami and other artists, but at least they aren't making money off of it), but also OFFICIAL DDR mixes.

Do you think because you hire a couple of people, buy a couple of RedOctane pads, and build a Stepmania theme that this somehow morally justifies you making money off of other people's work while receiving no permission from them and giving no compensation to them? What you're doing is not only unethical, but most likely illegal. Showing these kinds of business ethics, I doubt anyone would pay for a theme from you.

Pie you would be surprised, i've seen companies around the US who actually use a "Stepmania" ddr game with pads, lights, and everything and they charge you per hour to be there...granted you could ALSO have other things like PS3 stations, 360 stations, etc.

As for paying for themes, as the Most Interesting Man In The World would say:

"....No."

Unless it's from Konami and it would help make the game 100x better than it would normally be (oh hai PS3 DDR), then yes, but if it's for Stepmania, then that's like asking for someone to pay them to watch you play DDR, it just doesn't make much sense for something you do for the community. Hell even BEATRIX was a better person for themes because he made a theme for free and for us to try out even though it looked like ur mom.

Yeah, I wouldn't buy a regular old theme. A pack that included a flawless theme, flawless song cuts, and flawless stepcharts, that I MIGHT pay for. But stepmania itself is FREE, as many people have said.

Above pack better have singles, doubles, and couples charts, too.

I'd love to show you if I could get the fraps video I made under 2GB in size (please help me). I've never released a theme publically. I got started theming last September when I needed to make a theme for an event my business had coming up. Since then I've made 6 themes and have two more coming up. While I might be relatively new to theming, I'm not new to DDR. I've innovative in my own ways each and every theme.

I saw someone mention Foonmix; I think having a theme on a decidely obsolete platform is a reason for change. Frankly, I never saw the Foonmix theme offering much in a way to innovate gameplay; it literally changed nothing and added very little over default. This is inherent in the fact that almost all 3.9 themes are pretty much just a face-change strictly because of the limitations inherent in the platform. I started theming on a custom build of OpenITG and made 3 themes on it. I was later forcibly moved to SM-SSC because what I was trying to do just wasn't possible in OpenITG without much source modding.

The others on the team haven't really said if it's okay to reveal their identities, but I have no doubts you've already seen their work.

Quote: hellrazor

Can you top ITG PC theme?
Already completed with my very first theme thanks to the help of AJ.

Quote: hellrazor

This is pretty much everything I would have asked for in a theme with workout modes, Survival Mode, Rolls, 3D Arrows, a functional (and fairly accurate) Calorie Counter, it's perfect for my home setup although there are a few bugs.
Those are fairly easy to include; but I left them out specifically because all of the themes I've personally made are event-specific and would have no need for those features. 3D arrows are entirely possible. What kind of bugs are apparent in the calorie counter? That code is the same code SM5 uses so those bugs would need to be ironed out in the code.

Quote: hellrazor

Can you alter the existing theme I use? Such as remove the Singles %/%% and Doubles %/%% at the title screen? Can you fix a broken Subtitle display, broken LONG / MARATHON markings on the song selection (currently it only appears AFTER I complete the song as long as I don't switch to the next song)? Can you get a functional ONLINE mode, like the default SM4.0 theme that I have to switch to when I want to play online? Can you fix courses where currently it only counts up to Song 5 then it becomes blank, many times I play courses with up to 40 songs and I have no idea what song I'm on past 5. Can you tell me how to fix songs with BG Animations created for SM3.9 to make them work properly on SM4.0 (they display in the top right corner on 4.0 where in 3.9 they are perfectly in the center of the screen).
All of those things you mentioned are possible. Going through code for older games sucks though; no lie there. My preferred platform is SM-SSC for pretty obvious reasons. In fact, I could make you a fallback theme so any theme you use will have certain common values with each other dependent on your fallback theme instead of default. For instance, want custom mods? Now you can have them on all themes instead of one. The other team members know the codebase for SM so they'd be the ones to tell me if how tedious fixing BGAnimations would be. I had that problem in SSC for a while too, and I think even OpenITG. Can you give me specific songs to look at so I can test these out again? It might be an issue in the theme actually which I haven't noticed for a while now.

Question for you: what do you mean about courses going blank after song five?

4-Panel Footprint strikes me as familiar. No idea where though.
It had some early support from Chuck of Hopscotch Mix so you might've heard it there. I don't know who else's posted about the business but I remember the CEO of Spreadshirt.com tweeting about it too not to mention the events themselves.

Besides the fact that I find your comment rude, I do make money off of this already in the commercial sector. Delusions of grandeur are honestly realizations of the market. I had no thought that the thread would be closed so fast considering 12 people have responded in the one day this thread was opened. If this is the treatment everyone gets in this forum I'd rather leave.

I'm glad I was able to find out your opinions. No reason to put down a market just because a few people are against the idea before a product is available. Tell me if I'm wrong, but the general reasoning is people are against the very idea of paying for anything related to StepMania and people are requiring it better than what's already on the market--a given. That means so long as we do what we're already setting out to do, there's a chance we'll have buyers. That's quite enlightening.

If you are also interested in the idea like hellrazor is, what specifics would you have for us to consider? I've got the pink message. If you want a custom-made theme, then it's entirely possible to do.

Oddly enough Mr. Saturn, where is your work? Where is your undeniable picture proof of your high quality themes that if you first glance at it you would fork over money to buy them?

I mean, UNLESS you want customers you HAVE to show them what you do if you are offering them a service, i mean, that's how business works, am i right? So where is your work Mr. Saturn?

EDIT: Saw your work...it's not BEATRIX horrible but...i wouldn't even get it for free if you offered it. Sorry man.
