#3?! WOW. I thought if it was on the list, it would be # 7 or 8. No shocker that Pac Man is #1.

Quoted for truth.Anyway, i like how it is #3, and i agree to what everyone is saying about it...
...but watch, if they release new patches/songs/crazy features on the GH:AC, in about...a few years there will be a whole 'nother community just like the DDR AC community has been doing for the past...8 to 9 years?
Disney Quest having 6 GH cabs is just fail, i would be ok with just ONE but 6?
National Tournament oppurtunities anyone?

lol
2 would have been decent knowing Disney. The fact that they went to get 6 GH cabs and not even repair or replace the pads for one DDR machine...that's just disgusting.

I can't believe how gullible I am to believe GH got #1..
it sounded crazy enough to be true nowadays.

Maybe 2 if it's a popular AC, but 6 is WAY too much.Post #28 · Posted at 2009-08-01 12:15:57am 15.9 years ago

Guitar Hero makes less money than Guitar Freaks (1st mix) at our local arcade.
The problem is that it's a machine geared entirely towards people who want to pay $3 per song, to play Guitar Hero in a public place, to show how good they are at it. Everyone who's actually interested in doing this is both good enough at GH to realise how out of sync it is, and so egotystical that they become frustrated by the timing issues.
It is, for all intents and purposes, one of the biggest flops in arcade history. With fans of the game shunning it, the machines only serve as a $3 "demo kiosk" for Guitar Hero 3, while most videogame stores have free demo kiosks for Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5.
I think GT's list is pretty good, actually. I know american arcade culture is completely different from japanese and uk cultures, so stuff like Ikaruga should probably have been on there.
Anyone have their own lists? I don't think GT chose any particular criteria to determine the "best" games, just a combination of quality, cultural impact, and longevity. I don't think anybody could argue that Pac-Man isn't #1, whichever criteria you choose?

They actually acknowledged DDR as the "original" rhythm game and that GH is a spawn of the genre instead of saying DDR stole the rhythm concept.
Obviously, Pac-Man has to be #1, so #3 is pretty high for DDR.

It had a song select. Songs unlocked in Story Mode can be played in Free Mode.
Konami's first 3 music games (beatmania, Dance! Dance Dance! and Dance Dance Revolution) work in exactly the same way, except you can choose alternative (harder) songs for some stages, if you scored high enough on the previous song. Every time you unlock a song (by playing it), you can select it in Free Mode. You can only reach the Boss Song (Extra Stage in DDR) by playing (and scoring highly on) certain songs.

Long Answer :
Parappa The Rapper came first, was a massive hit, and was the prototype for all music games afterwards.
When they came out, beatmania was widely regarded as a very bland Parappa The Rappa clone, and Dance! Dance! Dance! and Bust A Move were considered to be a seperate genre of "Dancing Games", which focused on the inputting ellaborate key combos, while keeping the beat yourself. "Music Games" were games where the player's input generated the music.
When Pump It Up came out, it was basicaly beatmania / Parappa, converted to 5 floor panels, but without the "audio manipulation" aspect, and DDR came out right after that. They were both so more popular thay BAM and DDD were quickly forgotton, and the PIU/DDR mould is what we now consider to be "Dancing Games".
The first music game to have an open "song selection", as opposed to a series of increasingly difficulty stages was 'Pump It Up : The Oldies But Goodies'. Everything before that made you play through a story mode, unlocking songs if you achieved certain scores, and always forcing you to play certain songs on certain stages.

Yeah, I'd put Pac-Man, DDR, Street Fighter 2, Ridge Racer and Time Crisis all in the Top 10. Any order. I'm trying to make Top 10 a general one, without sequels (excluding SFII) and over-saturating it with one genre.
