Thoughts on Bar Hugging

I'm really tired of seeing these dumb threads on every single rhythm game forum. These arguments have been beaten to death for years. Seriously, it's really stupid.

Hades and Phoenix aren't full of BPM changes. Hades has 4, Phoenix has 2. Really, you should be able to nail Phoenix.

And I converted to bar usage a couple of years ago. I really don't care what I can and can't clear no-bar, as the machine isn't going to give me a different score for doing so.

lol I find it hard to use the bar for some reason. I just don't know how to position my hands It could be maybe that I'm not tall enough. Thus, I have never used the bar on any song.

I’ll admit it. I do it, but only if it’s a very hard chart for me, or if I’m in a near death. If you don’t like the bar, then don’t use it.

I use the bar for slowdowns and 10s+ (except a few nines). Also if you grew up playing with people that used it then you would most likely accept it as well, which is the case for myself and everyone I play with. I dont really use it as much during swim team season though because I get godly stamina from swimming

EDIT: meant to say that in fast songs I don't use use the bar for slowdowns

I would guess the bar helps a lot on timing I just wish I could use it I know I would have more stamina

Here is my imput:

I only use bar when i ACTUALLY want to get a higher score (apparently it helps for some reason) and only when i play a REALLY hard song (FAXX, HDV, PR, PH, you know the rest).

Other than that, i don't rarely use it

Not all of the time...

...only when "the going gets tough" or i just want to get a high score >_<, but i normally don't use the bar, (although it frustrates me that i keep seeing more greats when if i were to play the CS i could AAA the song or something...but i know that the timing is stricter and stuff so bleh).

As far as I'm concerned: Scores obtained while Bar Hugging are completely meaningless. You didn't really do anything. You might as well grab a burger and some fries, fart, scratch your balls and cap it off with a cat nap while you're bar hugging.

I have never, ever understood the appeal. (Yes, and before you say TO PASS THE REALLY HARD SONGS!! Maybe they should stop making those pieces of crap!) Quite frankly, it looks kinda dumb and no wonder people make fun of DDR players. But hey, if you like that... go for it. Whatever tickles your pickle!

Man these debates are always so dumb. First off, I'll state now that I'm a competetive player. I have fun playing the game anyway, but I have more fun when I'm fighting for high scores with friends, or playing in a tense tournament.


And you look down on them for using the bar? Nice way to validate your views on them being elitist.

Nobar players complaining about bar players, but acting like elitist dicks themselves about not using the bar = lol. I personally think players who play harder songs nobar 'look kinda dumb' since lots of flailing = more stupid looking than minimised movements, but each to his own.

Think about it guys. At the end of the day this is a video game that gives you score based on how accurately you can hit arrows in time to a pattern of notes which goes to the music. It's not a game that scores you on the technical aspects of actual dancing, so who're you to judge who's wrong for using something which has been built into the machine to achieve high scores? The bar was built in such a way and position that you can happily grab ahold of it and use it to keep your balance whilst playing the game. Do you not think that if the game was meant to be played without the bar they'd have removed it in later revisions of the game?

If people want to play bar or nobar that's fine by me, as long as they enjoy the game. But if we're playing with any level of competetiveness, I don't see why anyone would want to handicap themselves by not using something that's there to achieve a better score. It'd be like me playing someone in streetfighter but deciding never to throw them as I think it's cheap, then ragging on people who threw me. Just because I handicap myself in such a way, doesn't mean other people who want to win do. And it certainly doesn't mean I can diss them for not making imposing restrictive playing styles upon themselves just because I think the regular way is cheap.

I don't rely on the bar, but when I play a really hard song, I'll use it. I'm a sightread player, so I pretty much use the bar for anything that maxes out one of those top categories on the groove radar (Chaos, Voltage, and Stream...Stream especially).
