sorry, maybe i'm missing something, but i see no difference between that red PS2 and both my white JP PS2 and black US PS2, both are slims.

Hi n00b!! Where have you been? How are you doing?

Well, mageman's cousin (the owner of the PS2 in question) has had problems since the purchase of that model.

Do you have any idea on what it might be? Most notably, the system frequently prompting him to format his memory card

Well, I came clean to him. Here are some info I got from him.

The PS2 was bought in the Toys department of Sm Department Store (think wal-mart). Since it's a reputable mall (at least to me) I won't be so suspicious about it.

The memory card problem surfaced when he tried to save "I will insert the title here later since he can't tell me as it was long according to him." After being prompted to format the memory card (which he did on the menu, not the game itself), he tried to save again and the save file came out okay. He has never had any memory card problems so far.

All that's left is why the console can't read his PS1 games.

He thought I wanted my own PS2. I'd prefer a PS3 or an Xbox 360.

He initially did not know I posted this here. I never told him why I wanted to take pictures of it in the first place.

I apologize if this is not in the right forum.

So the other day, my cousin bought a ps2...

And when I saw it I was like, woah, since I haven't seen that kind of PS2 and I want to know if that model exists.
Because not only is it smaller (big shocker), the place where you put the game disk is quite weird.

So is this a real model?

SCPH-9000x (x is the region 'code') is the newest model PS2 where the biggest change is the power supply reintegrated into the console itself. This means no more fat bricks in the middle of the power cord. All US PS2 slims made sometime after 2005 had their modem ports removed.

So would that mean, there's no modem in the unit at all?

If by modem, Exor means online gaming, then yes they had the port removed, but they included it inside the slim PS2 models. They also include a disc to prepare the connection for online gaming, so there's no need to buy that big block that goes in the back of the original PS2 for online play.

The only game that you'll be missing out on entirely by using the slim PS2 is Final Fantasy XI

From the pictures, nope. Just the ethernet port. The modem port would be right next to it.

I (or he) could care less about online gaming, or I'm not thinking outside of DDR enough to even care.

i've been lurking :p i havnt had anything to contribute to a thread, so i've just been reading new info that gets released. it seems to be rule #1 of this site, so i figured i would just lurk until i had something to say. besides, my last few posts seemed to be nothing more than correcting people on old information, that was my first sign that i wasnt contributing to anything :p

anyway, i've seen the "format memory card" message once, but i ignored it. luckily for me it was when i was creating an initial save, so i was like "lol no" and restarted. loaded up my memory card and deleted some saves from games i didnt own any more and tried again and it worked.

as for the whole modem thing, you can see the lan port in the pictures, so whoever said that just doesnt know what they're talking about. both of mine have the lan port as well. they can play online, but no slim supports the HDD to my knowledge.
