Except it might hurt 3 times as much if you accidentally hit all four mines. Laughing Hard

True, but if you're going to bring that up, then you may as well not step anything, because the DDR lifebar is so much more harsh than the Stepmania life bar (I play SM on Life Difficulty 4, and I can tell there's a huge difference between it and DDR).

Hence why I'm 50/50 on it.

Has anyone worked out the values for the relevant SM settings/metrics to simulate (to a reasonable approximation) the life bar used in recent DDR mixes? (not just LifePercentChangejudgment - the DDR life bar behavior corresponds to some nonzero value of Progressive Stage Lifebar, but I'm not sure what value)

Honestly, it just seems there are way too many differences to shock arrows/mines to make this worthwhile.

-Blink effect
-OK judgment when you miss them, adds to your score.
-N.G. judgment when you hit them, breaks your combo.
-More sensitive (I can't be the only one who thinks that shocks are much more sensitive than mines)

I mean, it's not like we went out of our way to find ways to implement the HP gimmicks...we just ignored them. As I said, they're not even unique charts, so it just seems like a waste of time/energy to sort of use a substitute for them.

So would omitting them be the solution?

I definitely agree with you on the shock arrow sensitivity. It's either that or I just really suck at Horatio Challenge.

As for the shock arrows, I propose something as close as possible to it.

Shock arrows = Air + Mine + Freeze

Minor Solution? LR Jump Freeze the length of a 64th with 2 mines in between. Perhaps with 2 mines on top of the jump.

It's a tradeoff. You can't hit them in the game but since it's technically a freeze jump in theory, it's the closest we can get until someone makes Stepmania 4.5.

I think Konami did this on purpose so we can't sim it. Personally, it makes the $30 dollars I shelled out for it worth the money but others will disagree.

Lol, you haven't experimented with extremely short freezes, or played a sim that does. With a freeze that short, you can get a late great, or even a late perfect, and get NG for the freeze, because your feet weren't on the panels when the freeze ended. I have a simfile made by darknote that uses this gimmick to make it harder to get OKs on all the freezes.
My other problem with this solution is that the shock arrow is specifically meant to be a time when you aren't touching any panel, thus my laughter at the fact that the game claps on them in training mode.

Couldn't somebody go to the StepMania forums and make some feature requests? (I'm willing for that somebody to be me.)

Holy moly, awesome freaking upload al2k4!

I'll do what I can to help (keep in mind that I don't own the game yet).

I'm a computer programmer by profession. So my time might be better spent adding shock arrows to Stepmania 4.0 SVN.

I think we should still put Mines in their place for accuracy. There's always the mines off options.

SM3.9+. it has attack mines from mungyodance. they wont break your combo, but they'll turn blink on.

also, if we dont at least put the mines in the place of shock arrows then we cant even simulate how some of the charts are played. if we dont include them horatio oni will just be horatio oni with less steps. atleast the mines will make you have to play it the same way, even if they dont have the same effect. i vote to sub them with mines. stepmania isnt DDR anyway, and doesnt act like it in a lot of ways. saying mines arent a good substitute is just ludicrous considering other things dont emulate the same. timing windows are a good example of that. if you want 100% perfect DDR, play DDR. if you want simulation, and doing what works, play stepmania.

on the note of shock arrows in stepmania, is anyone working on replacing the mine animation with shock arrows in the solo note skin?

I just sent an email out to the stepmania devs about including support for shock arrows in the SVN version.

I imagine the consensus will be to add an option to the game to switch bombs to shock arrows if the current team will allow new features to be added at this point anyway.

I'll keep you updated as I start getting responses.

EDIT:

I'm starting to get some replies. It's going to take a while to figure out what to do.

Apparently, it's possible to simulate shock arrows using the LUA system. Plus, you can include lua files with the data files for the music. So it's possible to write LUA files to go along with the song to simulate shock arrows.

So, for right now, I recommend that people use bombs in place of shock arrows, and I'll keep everyone updated.

I already made a few DDRX simfiles, Horatio and on the bounce, but Horatio only has basic and expert, and on the bounce only expert. And...I made really random BGs for them also.

If you want them anyway...
