This week's class discussion in psychology is to decide whether or not alcohol and marijuana should be legal/illegal. This is the teacher's response to one of the students. I also wound up getting a similar response for my response to the topic.

Quote
You raise some important issues here. I want to briefly address the question you ask about WHY marijuana is illegal. To answer this question, it is important to understand that political motivations certainly played a primary role here. As far as WHY marijuana has not been decriminalized, it is important to understand history and the fact that the criminalization of marijuana in particular is steeped in racist ideology supported by a propaganda of fear. I want to provide you with some information about the history of its criminalization. Many people assume that marijuana was made illegal through scientific, medical, and government research which determined that this was too dangerous to be in the hands of the public. The real story shows a much different picture. Those who actually voted on the legal fate of this plant never had the facts, and were dependent on information supplied by those who had a specific political goals to deceive lawmakers. The history of marijuana's criminalization is filled with racism, fear, protection of corporate profits etc.... In the years before the depression there was a significant growth of Mexican-Americans in the Western part of the United States as a result of the revolution in Mexico in 1910. Mexican laborers were known to use the marijuana plant as a recreational drug by smoking the leaves of the plant. It was not until Montana outlawed the drug in 1927 that the truth revealed itself. It was noted that a Texas senator said on the Senate floor: “All Mexicans are crazy, and this stuff [marijuana] is that makes them crazy.” This comment alone can show that these laws where not backed by anything but racism against Mexican-Americans. On the east coast of the United States, we saw similar arguments playing out- this time being directed towards Latin Americans and black jazz musicians because marijuana was a big part of the music (especially jazz) scene. The strongest advocate for the criminalization of marijuana was a man named Harry Anslinger who said the following:
“There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz, and swing, result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others.” Obviously, his argument was built upon lies and had a strong political agenda. These are some of the roots of the criminalization of the marijuana plant in this country

Interesting...Quote
teacher's response

Wait...that's a response? For a teacher to give that much feedback regarding a student's answer and include specific examples, it seems more like the teacher had a particular answer that they wanted to see/hear from every student. Honestly, that doesn't seem like much of a discussion.
