well for osaka EVOLVED, its just putting certain parts of the song in a different area. plus you can tell from the beginning what version you're playing.

Does anyone know if the tokyoEVOLVED versions was ever officially referred to as 'Type A', 'Type B' etc.?

Nope. tokyoEvolved was only playable on Hottest Party 1 where there was no training mode, so the three versions never received official names. Technically, there's no way to tell which one was officially Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3. People just generally categorized them as Type 1 (ver A) being the most streamy, Type 3 (ver C) being the most chaotic, and Type 2 (ver B) being in between.

All three have different endings and the same beginning, like roppongi EVOLVED. They're fairly different, and the charts are certainly quite different. They're pretty good actually.

I guess my prediction about a complete "evolved" course where each song in the course uses a different version isn't out of the question at this point.

IR5? Perhaps as a Boss Rush? That'd be pretty cool, actually, but I suppose due to the nature of the different song variants, using it for IR would be a little unfair since you could roll the song variants at which you do best (or worst).

Who knows, if America/Europe skips X3 and goes to X4 we'll have it unlocked by default. Doubt that'll be the case but eh, who knows what KoA is thinking/doing at the moment...

When has it ever been the case that a sequel of DDR doesn't have the previous unlocks as part of the default list? (sans 5th Mix -> Max) And I thought KoA had almost nothing to do with DDR other than their terrible job at promoting the game here in America.

Oops, i forgot to add to that last part that I doubt KoA would release X4 without an X3 first, even though we would have already known all there is to know about X3 once it's released ala DDR X2 US AC release after a few weeks all of DDR X2 JP AC was unlocked to the public/known to be unlocked. As i said, I honestly have no idea what they are planning on doing with the DDR AC games in America and Europe, we may get X3 eventually, we may not and they might skip it for X4 or something...

...or we may never get DDR AC games ever again *dundunduuuun* and they just keep releasing DDR CS games for US...and EU too.

I guess its back to importing for us non East Asian Type countries, like the good ol' Extreme days. Sure, the pain of not unlocking new songs as they come out will be great, but at least we won't have to deal with those awesome Betson cabinets. Too bad importing costs more than the arms and legs of an entire bus load of Brazilian soccer players.
