From my perspective, the main problem with SMX in general is that there are too many licenses/crossovers and not enough original music (assuming there even is any, I can't actually tell). The game will lack its own identity if both the gameplay and the song list are not unique enough. Sure, a newer/casual player might not know whether or not a song appeared in another game, but regardless, I don't think any casual player today would be excited to play SMX after a quick glance at the song list either (it doesn't have the right mix of "come for the hottest pop singles, stay for the original music"). The main reason for adding licensed/popular songs is supposed to be to attract new players and build a bigger audience for the game, and I don't think the licenses that are in the game are popular enough to do that.

Maybe they're aiming for nostalgia from people who grew up with DDR Extreme at every arcade on Earth?

Don't forget, they likely can't afford to get "big name"/top 40-tier stuff.

Then maybe this game isn't for you, and that's okay. But that doesn't mean it can't be for everyone else as well.


It's almost as if you haven't taken a look at the full songlist, and instead have chosen focus on a small subset of it.

I'd also like to add that the Beyond Astral Hard chart and Monolith Hard chart feel like they're on entirely different planes of difficulty. Beyond Astral looked like an easy 12 at most, Monolith looked like a mid/hard 14 (and was admittedly a fun-looking chart, Beyond Astral looked boring, though). There is a HUGE gulf there, and most of the 18s I've seen look more like Beyond Astral than Monolith. Not that DDR doesn't have its difficulty jumps, but imagine if the only chart you had to prepare for Healing Vision (Angelic Mix) EXP was Shades of Gray EXP; that's what StepmaniaX looks like to me.

I do believe you are getting scales completely mixed up, because your comments make no relation to SMX's difficulty scale, FWIW. It's NOT DDRs.

It wouldn't make sense to release a teaser picture with pixelated cover art of songs nobody has heard of before ;)

Is this available somewhere? I remember last time Kyle Ward released a simfile pack and theme for Stepmania on a cabinet and a Playstation 2 disc, everybody already had it on their pc.

Yup, absolutely new charts that are modern and utilize the layout that SMX is.

@chewi I'm not sure what you goal is here? You're posting snippets of the charts that are different patterns? Could you actually say what you're trying to do? But I guess our legs must really be hurting if we need these supposed "crutches" ;).

We'll continue to license and get songs that deserve being revived and that players are demanding, as stated before. Hope you all enjoy the new content and we can't wait for what's in the future!
