After having played it a bunch today, yeah I'm just echoing all the other UI complaints. Why the hell does it use the number pad now? Having to reach down into there and press the 9 key just to open the mod menu is annoying. And my god, the "folders" has to be the most convoluted and ass-backwards way I've ever seen a rhythm game handle folders. Having to keep pressing 6 on the number pad and going into a separate menu to select individual song packs to show up in an "all music" list.....what the fuck, why?
It also doesn't show high scores unless you press the 1 key to toggle them on, which is just...okay why? Why is something like that on a toggle?
Also clear lamps don't exist anymore, so I can't see if I've PFC'd all the level 13s. Thanks, konmai.
It's like Konami hired a 3rd party company to design this UI, that has never played a rhythm game before.

Another thing, why is the default song list mostly licenses? A3 started out with 9 default original tracks and one Extra Exclusive. It's weird to me.

The AAA PFC icon under the jacket tells you that. It's functionally the same thing as a lamp, it just doesn't glow.
If they had high scores show by default people would complain that there was nothing on screen showing what the number pad does. It was a lose lose but either way. The number pad has been there with a lot of these functions (like 0 to toggle what your pacer is going for, 9 to open options, 3 used to switch to Doubles now that's on 8) and for new ones 2 and 5 for difficulty is better than having it on the pad, 6 to open sorting options is better than left+right.

Yeah I'm not a fan of there not being a real ES song. It feels weird. Like, thanks for the 4th song but give me something to try and accomplish here besides just filling in scores for Flare points.Post #284 · Posted at 2024-06-16 02:19:00am 1 year ago

The folder system is good tbh. I think it would be recieved a lot better if it was set to All Music by default, and if you weren't forced to learn it under a strict timer. But there's a nice level of customization there that I wish more rhythm games had.

Which could easily be solved by not moving a bunch of functions to the number pad for no reason. Or moving the number pad legend somewhere else.Post #286 · Posted at 2024-06-16 02:48:08am 1 year ago

Or moving the number pad legend somewhere else. And people were already complaining before release that the song select screen was too busy. Adding the legend for the number pad as well as the world/area/machine/personal score pane would certainly have just upset people. And again, we’re just gonna have to disagree on this one. Konami has been moving toward using the number pad for several games now. What World is doing with it isn’t new, you just refused to use it in the Ace games. You don’t like it, that’s fine. For someone new to walk up to the machine having everything on the number pad with a guide on screen makes more sense. If we started with the number pad and switched to “yeah left plus right on the machine opens the sort menu, hold down start to set your options, double tap the up and down panels to change your difficulty, you just can’t swap between singles and doubles” you would very quickly realize how dumb that setup actually is. I’m sure someone complained that Max added an options menu when stepping the codes out on the pad worked just fine for years, too. We had what we had for a long time because the machine had 3 buttons on it. We don’t have that limitation anymore, I don’t think we should be navigating the game like we do. I’ve been using the number pad for a while, I’m surprised there is this much push back against it.

You'd think for a brand new game it would feature in house artists.

RemyWiki implies you can no longer change the speed mod after the song begins but before the first arrow; is this accurate?

people keep forgetting that Konami has always actively looked a way to screw the in-house artists over since 2017

It's too busy because of the background images. Remove those, and you've got plenty more open space to put stuff.Quote: n00b_saib0t
What World is doing with it isn’t new, you just refused to use it in the Ace games.
I used it plenty, it just wasn't required for the core functionality in browsing the song list. You could browse the song list just using the menu buttons; the numpad was only used for extra stuff like toggling the score target, and an alternate button for accessing the mod menu.
Quote: n00b_saib0t
For someone new to walk up to the machine having everything on the number pad with a guide on screen makes more sense.
....or, just keep using the simple arrow buttons like the series always has. Using a number pad to browse menus doesn't "make sense" to someone who is new to the game and sees bright flashing arrow buttons before they see a small number pad beside them.Quote: n00b_saib0t
I’m sure someone complained that Max added an options menu when stepping the codes out on the pad worked just fine for years, too.
And that person is stupid because going from manually-entered pad codes to a dedicated menu is so much better. Pump it Up did the same exact thing; for over a decade you had to enter speed mods and any other modifiers by using step codes on the pad, but then in 2010 they just moved it all to a mod menu and I was relieved to never have to do that step-code shit ever again. Here, we're taking something as simple as basic arrow-key menu browsing and moving functionality to a number pad for no good reason. It's not the same thing.
There's pushback against it because they changed something for no good reason. The new system is worse. It's tedious, clunky, unintuitive, and much slower to browse than any rhythm game I've ever played. Like I said before, it's like this UI was designed by someone who has never played a rhythm game.

Shame, with all of those bumps upward it seemed maybe we might’ve retroactively got our first Lv 20 after all these years lmao.

I tried the new mix tonight, and yeah, it could definitely use some quality-of-life improvements.
There are way too many songs in this game for ABC sort folders (or at least quick letter-skipping) to not be easily accessible. This issue is compounded by the fact that switching from Singles to Doubles moves your cursor all the way back to where you started. I spent about fifteen seconds scrolling from "air" to "Tsugaru", switched to Doubles, and found myself sitting back at "air". What a waste of time.
Even though the interface looks cluttered and busy in screenshots, in action it feels very static and dull. Just the same still image for the entire song... it feels like a fresh install of Stepmania. There also isn't a lot of visual distinction between the different step judgements. I found it hard to keep track of how many Greats I got during the song, because only the first one stands out.
The new announcer could be good, if he wasn't reading lines that clearly weren't written for him. Have you heard him say "these beats are the dun-diggity" on the music selection screen? Your school principal could probably do a more natural reading of that line.
But hey, at least the score reset allowed me to momentarily be the world's best "La Bamba" player.

You can filter them by version, but it's not as granular as it used to be. For example, all of 1st-Extreme is now in the same category.
