I've only just noticed Junko bolded the entirety of the top 15 at the time. Something tells me people aren't playing the game.

Am I some sort of simfile scrub for not knowing the difference between a 'VBR' and a 'CBR'? Would love someone to tell me what this means. Looked it up on Wikipedia, and it's about as clear as musical terms usually are on there.

Because I play all the files in Edit Mode. And I'm not good enough of a player to analyse a chart in real time, so I stop and start at times. This is more of a stepper's problem than a player's problem, though, since they have to start and stop the song at various points many times to check if the steps feel right to them.and you're not playing simfiles from the beginning because...?

No, not at all. VBR is Variable Bit Rate, the music file has varying bitrate from start to finish. CBR is Constant Bit Rate, the opposite of that. Bitrate is the number of bits a song contains per second, usually the higher the number, the higher the quality. If you have Winamp or something that can tell you the bitrate of a song as it plays, you can tell if it's VBR (the number fluctuates) or CBR (the number stays constant). There are probably better tools on the internet, though.Post #226 · Posted at 2016-04-13 04:17:56pm 9.1 years ago

I don't follow this train of thought? You can't stop the chart in Game Mode, so that problem's all down to the player for choosing to play the chart in a secondary mode.

then you are not qualified to say anything about these charts. if you can't even play the songs the way they're meant to be played, all the way through, then who are you to make judgement on the product as a whole? songs aren't best experienced in chunks - that's not how this game or tourney operates.Post #228 · Posted at 2016-04-13 04:19:41pm 9.1 years ago
I mean, if you're a stepper and you want to chart a song, you probably want to play a song at various points to test the patterns you made. I probably didn't word that clearly, sorry.
Also, I did play all of them all the way through at least once, but not always the first playthrough. I start and stop because there are sections I want to examine again. It's more like if I can play it all the way without looking back, I did, but if there are some parts that I find confusing, I take a second look at it, then I play the song again from the start with the information I learned.

Don't whine because someone tests the files differently. Vincent's method let's him spot technical flaws faster and you can see how the fileis structured in the editor, so it's better in a way.

It is common practice to play charts in normal game mode, and then move to edit mode to analyze the chart further (slowing down the music rate to hear a particular rhythm more clearly, viewing large sections of the chart at a time for left-/right-facing biases or mirrored patterns, comparing repeated motifs for consistent patterning, etc.)
It seems a bit taboo to bring up "ITG" conventions, but here's a review I wrote as a judge for a simfile contest on another site:
The good: The arrow patterns are pretty darn comfortable. Aside from the occasional misled foot, which I'll discuss below, nothing is grossly in need of fixing and it all flows. I'm a fan of b128-134 and b236-243/297-306 in particular. The chart is strongest in the second half. I can highlight b206-269 as a passage that looks like you approached it with a predetermined rhythm and placement plan. It's the most positively memorable part of the chart! Now all you have to do is extend that attention to the rest of the track.
Room for improvement:
- Don't feel obligated to layer so much. b28-96 oscillates among at least three different layers; b270-end transitions from vocals to percussion too frequently. Anything the player can latch onto is lost. Try sticking out one rhythmic line for a full two measures at a time, especially in the outro.
- Watch your freeze lengths throughout. Almost none of the freezes that highlight the vocal note duration are technically the right length. Some of these freezes cause ambiguous foot leading (b55.5).
- The gimmick concept is good and most of them are executed properly, but it does only take one bad apple to spoil the barrel: b128-137 shifts 10ms late overall, with maximum deviations of 11ms early (b132.5) and 15ms late (b134). They're also inconsistently applied - b247-250 is one slice where I expected gimmicks and found none.
Nitpicks:
Having trouble hearing the 16ths in b60-62; this run should probably start at b62 for best effect.
b82 doesn't have any accent to match this jump.
No sound at b83.5. Its analogue b67.5 goes to a faint breath intake, which is already pushing it.
The transition from b88.0 to b89.5 is pretty sudden.
Extend b91.5 all the way to b96.
b100.25, b104.25, and 110.25 probably shouldn't be there.
b108.25-109.25 should be shifted to b108.5-109.5.
I hear a x-xxx-x-xxx-x-xxx rhythm at b120-124, not full-on 16ths.
b158.25 probably shouldn't be there.
The "shock arrows" at b186.25 and b269.333 confuse me. Each forces the following jump or step very early, and includes an extra lane.
b189.5 and b190.5 shouldn't be there.
Surprised not to see steps at b205.25/205.75.
Very little of this is possible to sift out by only playing the chart in its entirety, and even if it is, it'd take so many playthroughs - I'd estimate three hours or more, per chart - to come up with this level of detail without edit mode. (I don't review Z-I-v contest charts to this level of detail because there are so many produced, and nitpicks on rhythm precision would only apply to the top 4 or so files each week.)Room for improvement:

Anyhow, VBR impedes all that. It takes only a couple seconds to set your encoder to CBR, or to just use OGGs, when exporting that final music cut. How is an inferior music format so important that it needs such a caustic defense?

First it's me not meeting deadlines (I made my point about that earlier), then it's the brackets and seeding are pointless and unfair, now it's the voting system and people may or may not be playing simfiles. God forbid someone votes a different way than someone else. I thought the entire point of why people wanted to change the voting system was so more votes can be spread out to songs. I love how people had a problem with the old voting system and that they demand the Simfile Shuffle voting system. I change it to that and what happens? People still find a way to complain.
At this point, I don't see a point changing any rules because people will argue them next year. If this contest is such a fucking clusterfuck for people, then I'd rather have people not participate than bitch and complain about the entire thing and ruin it for others who are enjoying it. If you don't see a point in participating, then don't. No one is making you stay.

Who was complaining? The Shuffle voting system still works. And if there's anything close to worth complaining about it's not having enough points for 38 files in one round.
Another note- VBR means Variable Bit Rate. I learned that last year when I made an identical mistake. It throws your sync off a little, and can mess with the way the song sounds next to other songs.

No one complained about the voting system, I only made one comment about Junko not bothering because he gave 1s to the top 15 and called it a day. It legitimately irritated me.
Also I'd like to say that the 'VBR throws sync out of the window' comment still confuses me, as I obviously had to be in edit mode to make the file and it ran fine as it did in the main game. Does anyone else have this same issue that vincentw does?

So is Aegis' file disqualified or not? I noticed he reuploaded it.
I believed he dropped out so yes it would be.Post #238 · Posted at 2016-04-13 09:42:31pm 9.1 years ago

I have the same issue as vincentw. I've done a lot of in-depth simfile judging in the editor for other sites, so I completely understand where he's coming from. Having the sync go completely out of whack is really frustrating when you're trying to analyze one specific part of a song and usually I just convert the .mp3 to a stable bitrate so I don't have to deal with it.
