I'm going to try the files out in a minute, but I'm still shit-scared of giving criticism on any of them, since I spent most of last night trying to bug Oni and DMAxel into teaching me how to make a more fun chart :{

"DINGDONG♥HEARTS"
Bulletproof
Fun Light chart
Ok Standard
Heavy had potential
Challenge was unnecessary
I believe that omitting the oni chart would have made the heavy chart more interesting to play.

Disco the Ground
Light could have used jumps to keep the chart from going stale. excessive use of the paradiddle pattern
Standard needs more pivot crossovers
Heavy needs more pivot crossovers
Fun chart to a bland song.

Super Electric highway
Light measures 31-38 could have incorporated a jump pattern to avoid repeating the start of the song, and could have also been a great way to increase the difficulty into the freeze section
Standard oh hey another paradiddle pattern. *gets the feeling that the light and standard chart were copy+pasted*
Heavy *gets the feeling that the simfile was copy+pasted into the lower difficulties*
Both the standard chart and heavy chart could have used more pivot crossovers LDR RDL etc etc

Everything's Gonna Be Alright
Except for the Light chart. What the hell???
Standard could use more pivot crossovers
Heavy was ok
I think this is another simfile that copy+pasted for the easier difficulties.

Hanz Up
Light is way too hard for a light chart
Standard felt like the expert chart
Heavy :L
another copy+paste file?

kaze wa fuitieweriowhatever
best Light I've seen thus far
the Standard chart was pretty good. This was my second hearing of the song so I kinda know what the expert chart will look like.
Heavy fun chart
is copy+pasting and watering down becoming the standard in the simfile community? I'm starting to see how many people are able to churn out simfiles so quickly. :/

la noche es para nosotros
Light starting on measure one, ok. could have used more pivot crossovers.
Standard could have used more pivot crossovers
Heavy it was alright

Lovegame - pie did you make this chart?
Light nice use of pivot crossovers. thank you
Standard what happened to the pivots??
Heavy it was alright
nice editing
EDIT: it is pie. oh. ignore the above comments. the file sucks. Gaga only deserves full versions

MultiPONPONPON
Light fun fun fun. Only chart thus far that has proper spins.
Standard fun chart. pivots in measures 28, 30, 32, etc would have made it more fun
Heavy fun fun fun
best all around chart so far.

naughtgirl at the queen's palace
Light pivots. The streams could be shortened to allow the player some breathing room for the next stream
Standard it's alright
Heavy more pivots at the end would have been more fun

Now That I Have Found You
Light yay pivots!! however, the chart is much to hard for a 3 footer. Either rerate it to a 5 or simplify the chart.
Standard where did the pivots go? Great karaoke chart for standard. However, it's showing that there won't be much for heavy
Heavy fun.

PONPONPON
Light good chart to a terrible song. Needs more pivots
Standard you can take the chart and apply it to any other song and it will be better than this terrible song. Measures 34-50 could have been spiced up with a few pivot crossovers
Heavy lol macho gang. it was alright

Spooky
Light starts off a bit too hard for its difficulty. The rest was good.
Standard I like the spins
Heavy try not rely on leading with the right foot as much as you did here. It's ok to lead with your left foot, I promise.
good file

Sunset
Light shorten the death runs a bit to allow the player some breathing room
Standard great implementation of the spins. could have used pivots to spice up the chart. nice use of the copy+paste+mirror technique fun chart
Heavy holy crap, is this fun! The spins are great. Doublestep. pfft fuck that I'll spin like a boss. Even from measure 25-30. Beautiful. Most fun heavy chart so far.

Sreet Wane
Light eurobeat demands no crossover for the para freestylers. fun to para to
Standard personally, I would have started the steps at measure five so players can use the earlier measure to get a feel for the song. I counted five pivots. It could have used more. fun chart
Heavy in the third time playing the song, I got too wrapped up in it and I got caught off-guard by the speed up after the slow down. fun fun fun

Wuv U
Light shorten the streams to allow the player some breathing room
Standard light starts on measure 5. standard should have done the same. use more pivots
Heavy start at measure 5 plz. too many left and right arrows. use more pivots
Challenge overkill on the shock arrows at measure 33
the gimmicks really killed the song for me

ALL of you need to use more pivots in your patterns.

Why are you all afraid to use pivot crossovers? You guys are making charts like an ITG Jr team. "face the front at all times. turning the hips is bad form. LDR RDL LUR RUL patterns are forbidden yadda yadda Go for the staircase pattern LDUR and RUDL" You guys can do better than that.

Everything's Gonna Be Alright
I think this is another simfile that copy+pasted for the easier difficulties.

Huh?

The Basic chart is a homage to an old dancing game called "Stepping Stage", which used a lot of 90s rave music and terrible music videos shot in a similar style to this one. Stepping Stage has a really weird 6-panel layout, which means you only ever face forward when you play, occasionaly stepping slightly forward or backwards, but never turning to the side, to simulate para para dancing.

Now, I'm a huge believer is writing all 3 charts for 3 different groups of players. I know most people who play simfiles are good players who only care about the Maniac charts, or newer players who love the game so much that they've invested in a Stepmania setup, despite only being able to play Basic. I gear my basic charts entirely towards these players, and make charts that teach them things, and gently introduce them to concepts that most simfiles (official songs included) don't introduce very well.

The only time I've ever recycled a chart was for "She's So". In that case, the Trick chart was the chart I wanted to use, and the Maniac chart has a lot of things I knew I had to polish and change, if it was going to be a successful competition file. If I ever find this song on a Stepmania machine, the Trick chart is the one I want to play, but the Maniac chart is the one I think the majority of 7/8-foot players would rather play.

In this case, this Basic chart obviously follows the Stepping Stage gimmick, so the player is always facing forwards. Because they're rigidly facing forwards, it lets a new player gently get introduced to concepts that usually don't come until they play at a higher difficulty level. They're used very sparingly and repeated symmetricaly, so if the player doesn't grasp them at first, they at least now know the timing, and get another shot.

It guides them through a couple of rhythms, freeze arrows, double taps, streams, and a simple rhythm involving 16ths. The chart is also choroeographed in parts to follow the Para Para dance in the background, but it's not forced - the primary gimmick is that you're playing a Stepping Stage song while being gently introduced to some DDR concepts that you wouldn't normally get to experience at this level of play. When they see those same things come up in harder songs, they'll hopefully be able to think back and remember how to tackle them, instead of just getting confused and failing the song.

The Trick chart isn't built on the Basic chart at all, and concentrates on the player conciously making the choice to sometimes follow the (very slow) streams with their hips, and punishes them for facing forwards on specific streams. While the chart turns them to the sides, it puts them through a few simple streams that need to be followed with the hips, and shows them that they should always follow these specific streams in that way.

It's all about the player rigidly facing forwards (as new players do), and then having the song turn them towards the direction of the stream. It also uses the same simple 16th rhythm from the Basic chart, but this time forces them to follow with their hips. It doesn't use any pivot crossovers, because it's very deliberate in guiding the player around the pad, and throwing something like that in would seem to go against the educational intention of the chart. I realise this chart isn't actually very good, and if the deadline for files hadn't been moved forward 3 days, I would have completely scrapped and rewritten the trick chart to better get these ideas across, as well as editing the video to crop the visible areas into a wider resolution.

The Maniac chart is an 8-footer made up of formulas and patterns that I know to be fun, and compliment each other. It doesn't use any rhythms or patterns from the other difficulties, unless I subconciously came up with the same ideas 3 times on 3 seperate days. The Maniac chart uses pivot crossovers, and has a pattern where the player begins a pivot crossover, pauses for half a beat without reseting to a neutral position, and then continues the crossover, before repeating symmetricaly.

You should have mentioned the gimmicks in the simfile page so that other players can know what you're doing with the charts. I didn't even know there was a game called Stepping Stage, and I doubt many people know played it often.

While I understand and appreciate the thought put into the trick chart, it doesn't stand out from the other 15 files when they're all following the same patterns.

If you all want feedback, why wouldn't a reviewer look over the easier charts?

Besides, I find it odd that people use the Heavy chart for judging when all aspects of the file should be judged. And in not judging the easier difficulties, it implies wasted effort on the author's behalf on the easier charts.

So uh, yeah, I'll be voting on the easier charts.

Maybe? I don't think stepcharts need to be explained or justified, though? I only felt it was worth explaining because you singled it out as something which had no thought put into it, when it was actually something that had a lot of thought put into it.

I agree with the lack of turning in simfiles, but we're in a contest where we have to try and win votes, and there are always people who only want "ITG JR" charts, and will cry "DOUBLESTEP!" and vote against you, the moment you make them think about which foot to start a stream with, or include a stream that can't be read at 3x speed :{

It's a contest, so the goal is to make a file that everyone will enjoy, and something few people can find faults with. I took a huge gamble with my previous file , because I had 5 seconds without any steps, and it got a 50/50 reaction between people loving it or shitting all over it. You can surely understand that people are wary of including anything in a chart which could draw criticism, even if it's something they enjoy?

I didn't want to get into this, but since I think that I was referenced here it might be appropriate. I don't like "ITG Jr" charts, myself--never really got into them--and a lot of the charts that I create use copious amounts of crossovers and pivot turns (and I'm using 'copious' here to mean 'excessive', not 'lots of' ). The reason is that I enjoy pivot turns myself, and I make files that I like to play; after all, I'm the most available playtester for my files. But doublesteps can work well in certain charts, HVAM being a prime example from DDR and Electric Super Highway from this past week. Files are always open to interpretation, which is why I play things at least twice before calling anyone out on anything.

There, got my two cents in. Back to opinions.

Note: These are all based off the Expert charts, no more no less.

Wuv U: Nice crossovers/pivots, but the gimmicks are rather weird, and the steps during the main melody seem out of place.

Hanz up!: Nice crossovers/pivots, steps are well matched with the song, and chaotic gimmicks FTW

PONPONPON: Expert was kind of boring TBH, a little too slow and too easy for the song, and those jumps were kind of uncalled for. It was still a decent simfile (and an awesome song) but I've seen you do much better in the past.

Fading Day: A generally awesome chart, much like Oni's file from last week, I don't have anything negative to say about it. Flows very well and uses spins and pivots to excellent effect.

Kaze wa fuiteiru: Everyone take note, this is how easier charts should be done. Excellent crossovers, nice freeze tricks and follows the song very well. Definitely a keeper.

Electric Super Highway: Follows the song well, but the chart itself is pretty bland, you could've spiced things up with crossovers/spins/freeze tricks.

La Noche Es Para Mi: Excellent. Very nice use of crossovers and 16ths. Nothing negative to say here.

Sreet Wane: i c wat u did thar... anyways, not a bad chart, some of the steps didn't match the music that well, and some of the patterns in the chorus got repetitive, but not a bad file other than DAT LQ MP3 :O

MultiPONPONPON: A rather great file if I do say so myself. Some of the patterns during the 2nd chorus got a little repetitive but other than that it was excellent. Shame about the graphics though.

naughty girl@Queen's Palace: Didn't care much for this one TBH, the song was rather annoying and the steps were awfully repetitive. Can't say I blame you though, this song pretty much warrants repetitive steps.

LoveGame: Not bad at all, the difficulty kinda ratchets up at the chorus, but it follows the song well and is definitely worth playing again. Once again, shame about the graphics.

Spooky: Not bad either, didn't follow the song quite as well as some of the other entries but fun nonetheless. Felt a little unbalanced though, the beginning is a lot easier than the rest of the song.

Everything's Gonna Be Alright: The LQ MP3 kinda ruined it for me. Not a bad chart at all though.

Bulletproof: Not bad but not all that good either, the patterns were a little weird IMO

Disco the ground: Can't review my own file Tongue

Now That I Found You: I must say I really liked this, the patterns went with the song very well and felt very ITG 8-footer esque. The cutoff at the end was weird though.

"TAKING IT TO THE PIE"
Love Game: I liked this chart, but for some reason the beginning I kept wanting to turn more (I don't mean crossovers, I mean just turn the body). It's just because the song made me feel that way. Once the chorus kicked in I was finally able to move how I felt like the song wanted me to move so it felt better. Good use of 16th notes.

Spooky: I really like all the turning in this file. Only thing I'd change is possibly watch how often you make the player face a particular direction for too long. Good use of the freeze arrows to make sure you lock te player in a cross over position.

Eletric Super Highway: I felt like you held back way too much in this file. It felt more like a 6 than a 7.

Kaze wa Fuiteiru: I know you you wanted this song to feel relaxed but I kept wanting to do more in the song. My only complaint is that some of the freezes didn't seem intuitive with how they placed the other foot when you let the freeze go (it wasn't a problem though). I do like the amount of stream you put into this, it felt right.

Hanz up!: You already know. Those gimmicks. While they were executed really well, I think, they pulled me away from enjoying the chart. I focused more on trying to ignore the jumping stops and less on having fun.

Wuv U: The slow downs felt really out of place. The chart honestly felt way over done.

Bulletproof: Heavy: I liked the spins you put in here. This chart felt very 2nd mix-ish in DDR style. I actually liked this a lot. Challenge: I really like where you were going with this as far as pattern/rhythm goes, but I felt like execution of it was a bit off. If you had changed the direction of the jumps so it let you face the same direction for each portion of jump stream I would have liked it far more.

Everything's gonna be already: I dunno if it's just my set up or what but this song felt off sync. The chart itself was fine.

La Noche Es Para Mi: This chart was fine. Nothing against or for it. Solid.

Sweet Rain: This actually wasn't a bad file except I faced to the right a lot. The ending stream was out of place and the slowdown fit but where you decided to speed the song up was out of place and a bit too late.

Disco the Ground: Very nice chart. I think all the jumps should have been left out in the beginning and introduced in later to add progressive difficulty, but that's the only change I'd make.

Now that I Found You: The syncing was definitely off. But I just pretended it was a prepatched SuperNOVA machine so I felt better about it. Steps were just ok.

*MultiPonPonPon: I think the double tap freeze arrows were over used in the middle and I didn't care much for the tripe taps at this speed, otherwise it was a well made chart.

naughty girl@Queen's Palace: Unfortunately the song choice played a lot in this song. This song was so repetitive and grating on the ears. You did the best you could chart wise. Minus a few flow issues the chart was solid, but the song, not so much.

It would count as a forfeit if you quit now.
