I PFCd this last night, but what is up with so many shock arrows? (chart on the right) There are more shock arrows than steps, almost.
Is there something wrong with Player 2 Step Zone? its a little higher up than what it needs to be.
No, it is just one of the player preferences you can set much like in IIDX. It is like virtual "towel mode" so you purposely cover up the top (or bottom if you scroll reverse) part of the screen. Some players like to use this for timing purposes. I don't personally.

imo shock arrows made it in to the AC version because they were developed as a lazy gimmick for PS2 and gimmicks needed to be included to have comparable features with the Wii version.
step artists realize they have no real game play value other than being a joke and they make charts like the ones for Meme shikute SP and DP because that's really the only thing that would ever make anyone want to play shock arrows now; just for laughs..
on the topic of charts, i really hope they someday hold a step chart tournament. even though DDR Wii doesn't have an edit's mode, they have the web editor that could be updated. i just want to see more use being put to the edit functionality.
how has the eAmusement edit ranking been for exposure of edits in Japan? i wish we could get a pack out of the most popular edits from X2 to play on our machines and sm.

Memeshikute and smooooch are absolutely perfect applications of shock arrows. I'm totally ok with them when used like that.

I think he is attempting to say that Konami tried to take shock arrows seriously when they first came up with the idea. The overall response to them was negative due to them being poorly executed (Horatio

The funny counterpoint is that in DDR II, they actually removed the shock arrow charts from DDRX2 songs (smooooch and theory of eternity are the ones that come to mind atm).

i just think shock arrows are extremely limited.. i wouldn't think they were ever meant to be taken seriously when they were created, but i think they could be if they would be implemented differently.
and i think that even though smoootch challenge is a good chart it doesn't differ that much from Memeshikute, it's mostly 4th shock 4th shock 4th shock.

This is the most perfectly worded assessment of Shock Arrows I've seen.
I follow the common sense that if I don't like something I just won't play it. But the problem is these charts are not only played out in terms of creativity they take up the slot for what might have been a really good Challenge chart otherwise.

I definitely agree. I would have loved a 16

There is also the other problem of Konami lazily substituting notes in the

I think you mean Pluto the First. That is a crappy boss chart. I think Shock Arrows would have been better if they did not have to have all the arrows at once. They could do more with them, like ITG mines.

I know what it is but I attempt to wipe that song from my memory it's so bad.
TBH, my big gripe with shock arrows isn't that they take up all the panels, it is that screen flashes when you hit one which basically enables dark mode for half a second. I dunno if that has been removed in X3 but that is by far the biggest negative I have about them. At least in ITG when you hit a mine, you have an explosion sound but the screen doesn't flash.

Don't like Shock Arrows? Don't play then. Just because they exist for some songs doesn't mean they're taking the place of a chart that would have otherwise been there, X2 had a TON of challenge charts that weren't shock arrow charts. Most of the shock arrow charts stuck to licenses anyways.

We don't really know that Konami tacks SA charts to songs that would have never ever had a legitimate Challange chart.

I think I'd enjoy a fast, boss-like Shock Arrow chart where most of the Shock Arrows need to be actually jumped over instead of having a center step. Similar situations happen to an extent in Saber Wing
and somewhat in places in Vertex
. The problem with most current charts is that they're either really boring (Theory of Eternity
) or make no sense (Pluto the First
).

While on the topic of shock arrows... can anyone explain what was so awful about Horatio compared to its Expert chart? The shock arrows just seem like they make you take bigger jumps... unlike other charts where you step in the middle, a majority of Horatio's SAs involve you jumping over them, if that makes sense. I kind of think they're cool, but seeing as how I can barely pass Expert on a good day I haven't tried them myself... it looks like the only problem is that they're so close to the other arrows that they register when they aren't supposed to, which totally happened on the controller, anyway...
