I really do like Nintendo's online offerings... but the ONE flaw that kills it is voice chat. Seriously, having to use a phone app and go through all that hibbly-hobbly jaunch is a nightmare. I'll never understand why it's so hard for Nintendo to properly integrate this kind of stuff into their consoles.

Still skeptical... The Online Tax is going to suck, just like the other competitors' versions.
Mark my words.

It's cheaper than the other consoles, but whether it's a better deal is way too soon to call.
What ISN'T too soon is in how it pales in comparison to how PC does online, but we all knew this already.

One of the many reasons I dumped the PS and Xbox eco systems in favor of PC is the corporate tax they impose on online gameplay. I'm still disappointed that Nintendo decided to go this route with the Switch, even if it is cheaper. And with Mario Kart 8 DX, Arms, Monster Hunter XX, Splatoon 2 all year one titles, Nintendo's making sure you're hooked to its online multiplayer. Again however, at least it's yearly price is cheap, much cheaper than the competition.

Voice chat worked fine on the Wii U, so I don't understand why they decided to go this route. Oh well.

I'd highly suspect the reason is that the Switch simply doesn't have Microphone functionality, as a console.
In absence of any other explanation, it's the only one that really fits.

I'm guessing the chat app is required is to protect kids from the often nastiness world of online chat among gamers.

I can believe that. IIRC, one of the developers for Splatoon said that they kept online chat out for that specific reason.
...And yet, the irony is that a good portion of this nastiness is perpetuated by children themselves. So I guess it works both ways. Either way, I'm hoping that my preexisting headset will work with this.

Well... They tried. Unfortunately, the Gamepad mic didn't transmit very high-quality audio, so it was hard to understand what anyone was saying. At least it was just for in-between games of Smash Bros, so quick communication wasn't exactly necessary. (Tangental statement, but anyone remember that Smash Facts direct? "THE WII U GAMEPAD HAS... A MICROPHONE!!!") This may be one way to fix that, but I'm guessing it has to do more with the toxicity of the gaming fanbase.

The Nintendo Direct was SUPER hype!
I'm getting that Splatoon Octo Expansion, day one! Also, hoping that's a new SSB and not a port of 4. >>

It's time I revived this nearly 7 year old thread with this news.
The Nintendo Switch 2 has been announced and it's releasing in 2025:
They have also teased a new Mario Kart game. Worth the watch!

Not bad but personally I think the new system of the joy-con's is going to break really easy and going to have a lot of complaining like it had the drift of the Switch 1.
They could try to do a new different console or even change the design a little :]

There's no reason to change the console up as far as design because the Switch was Nintendo's biggest selling console of all time, over 162 million units sold worldwide in the 7 years it's been out, why change something that isn't broken? Plus Nintendo doesn't want another disaster like the Wii U making something different and flopping hard. Nintendo is playing it safe and for good reason. Make a sequel to switch, give people the power they wanted to increase the performance of Switch 2 games and Switch games, add some new features to keep it fresh, add QOL improvements to fix issues with the first Switch, keep what made them successful and don't take a risk with something too different so as not to alienate the fanbase and keep people buying a great console that everyone loved from the previous one. I say Nintendo did the right thing here with the new console. Also save your judgements about the console breaking until the direct April 2nd when they finally fully take the wraps off the Switch 2 and reveal the specs. Nintendo is not about weak parts, so the joy cons breaking will probably not be an issue, they will have some kind of locking mechanism to keep the joy cons in place(There are 2 buttons on the back of the joy cons by the triggers which means the joy cons will lock in place and will need to be pressed to unlock them from the sides, so don't worry about them breaking really easily), it's not gonna be some flimsy thing, but just keep an open mind till the April direct.

"F***ing exhausted." |
The existing joycon locking mechanism is a crappy little plastic tab that doesn’t actually lock the joy cons in place (there are good replacement metal tabs you can find easily but you shouldn’t have to). They wobble pretty bad too. The sticks are all ticking time bombs, most of them in my house have had to be replaced (I’ve got hall effect sticks in them now). Yeah, Nintendo kinda is about weak parts when it comes to the joycons. They kinda suck. Until we have the new one in hand to know that it doesn’t have these same issues Nintendo doesn’t get the benefit out the doubt. They had 7 years and multiple revisions to fix these issues and refused.

I mean come on the joy cons literally did not break off the switch unless you really actually give them a ton of force it's not like I'm breaking it over my knee, come on lol! I've never had them break and mine aren't flimsy on the switch. I think you're being a little harsh. And I still stand by what i said about waiting for the direct to see how it all works, we're basing these feelings on the reveal trailer, we have no idea the workings of how things are gonna work and feel. So I'm not gonna outright trash the thing for being weak without actually knowing whats going on with it. Sorry about you, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. Suit yourself.
