I've had the same sort of thing, one of my roommates became obsessed with a guy, and since everyone in my house shares chores, not only did I lose out on someone to talk DDR with I also had to do the trash on top of cleaning the bathrooms because apparently relationships are more important than being a decent person to everyone else.

I have friends; just not ones that like rhythm games.

Seems to be the case with many. Two of my friends were into rhythm games at one point, but after two years or so their interest wore off. To them I think it was more of a fad than a hobby. By the time I got into IIDX, most of their interest had faded. It would be great to have a local rival for IIDX since I find friendly competition always inspires improvement.

I have a friend who used to play Stepmania. Right now I have a friend who plays Cytus, and another who plays Groove Coaster. I think I know some people who like Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head right now.

Here's the deal with my friends and DDR: A lot of friends a few years ago would call me a faggot for playing DDR. I since no longer have those friends. At this point, the friends I have aren't really into DDR, but they'll play it when they see it. Hell, most people in my school don't even know what DDR is anymore. A lot of my friends watch my YouTube channel (I predominantly post DDR videos at this moment) and I'm thinking that if I post them regularly enough it could spark up an interest in my friends to play DDR.

What I found odd, though, was that many more people (~20) knew what IIDX/pop'n music was. I remember because my friend was describing it to me but didn't know the name, and when I told him "pop'n music" he recognized it instantly. So I just kept asking around, but most people thought it was a childish game due to the color scheme and overall look to it. And for IIDX, it was much less people, but my friend sent us a video on Skype of DOLCE playing Beach Side Bunny or something, and most people said "oh yeah, I've seen that game before" and recognized it when they saw my IIDX controller at my house.

Also, completely off topic: I am now regretting not trying the left pad on the Times Square DDR X, maybe it actually worked. I think I saw the left guy before me hitting a bunch of down arrows while the one on the right couldn't hit any. I probably won't be going back, though. I wanna go to Kon's arcade in June to play DDR 2013 but it's halfway across the country from me and my mom is not driving that far for DDR.

My closest friends don't play DDR but I've met "DDR friends" by playing at the arcade a lot. Maybe this could happen with you too? You don't necessarily need your regular friends to be your DDR buddies. :p

I would completely do that (hell, maybe even meet some Zenius members) but the closest arcade to me with DDR is Mohegan Sun, which is an hour and 15 minutes away and I only go once every 2 months.

(there might be one a little closer to me with Extreme but it's just a movie theater and my mom wouldn't drive that far just for Extreme)

You can hit a few but it's so unreliable and you have to hit the panels very hard to have any chance of making it work, and it's pretty unlikely at that. It's not worth it imo. It might be worth complaining to management though.

Chinatown Fair has its own issues but it's probably better.
