How did Tumblr profit (or break even) in the first place, anyway...?

Dunno, but it's going to be sad and funny given how we freak out every time Tumblr changes something. Hope there's enough chaos when Yahoo changes something that it'll actually be changed back. xP

I think that's just a natural part of the Tumblr community. Everyone's an activist, which, in itself, can be considered really awesome. They can get things done. So if Yahoo changes something, Tumblr can probably organize some sort of STOP SOPA-esque rebellion. Only, it's more among the lines of "STOP-YAHOO-TUMBLR-TAKEOVER-FIX-US-BECAUSE-IT'S-BROKEN-NOW" thing.

The one thing I hope is that they don't make your Yahoo ID and Tumblr account connected like they did with Google/Youtube. Geez.

That's pretty much a guarantee.

Also, FYI, Tumblr was going to get sold to somebody, it's been in the news for weeks. And guess who Yahoo! outbid... Facebook.

I've never used Tumblr, but I have seen its interface before. It looks nice/useable. For its sake I hope Yahoo does not screw it up and make it like their home page (i.e. clustered with random junk I could not care one bit about). Then again, it could be worse with Facebook. Their ability to make an interface is absolutely laughable.

tumblr is not financially sound, so they benefit immensely from this. Yahoo has a lot of money, tumblr doesn't. With the acquisition, tumblr is in a better position to do a lot of things. For example, tumblr can do advertising, which would help them turn a profit, and the only reason people complain about advertising is because we live in a social networking age, an age of technology where we expect to get information fast and do things fast. One ad here or there is somehow cumbersome to doing things fast and everyone loses their minds, but if it's one of the ways a website can earn money and sustain itself, then I fail to see why this is bad. tumblr also benefits from having a larger, more mature company take control and letting them do stuff in a way that will help the site grow even larger and make more money than it ever did.

Yahoo bought tumblr partially because it's the only major social networking site they can afford. Twitter, which is independent and could be bought, is worth $10 billion, way out of their price range. tumblr is worth far less ($1 billion is about as much as anyone would honestly spend to acquire it). Part of the move is also to make them feel younger, so it makes sense that you go after a site like tumblr, which they can afford and has a relatively young network of users. Both parties benefit from this, no one loses, so there's no reason to get upset over anything. Or do, it's fine, I guess I can see the reasoning of getting mad that a site you love is about to become more successful than ever and be better off for it. Obviously I don't know all the details, but it's more than most teens on tumblr know.

tl;dr tumblr gets more money, yahoo gets to feel younger by acquiring a popular social networking site, tumblr can advertise comfortably and make money with no drawbacks, users can complain about the website being more successful since they don't run the site and don't know how the real world works with respect to the financial aspects of owning a business.

p.s. Facebook and Youtube change their layouts constantly, but oddly enough they still have a ton of users that are active everyday. It's easy to say that if a site changes its layout that you wont use it, but then tomorrow you'll still use it anyway.

Hmm. I thought Tumblr already had ads. Maybe I was wrong. I have Adblock so I suppose anything's possible. I'm just associating the Youtube/Google purchase and thinking of what occurred there. I appreciate the fact that there are more features and whatnot, and I'm okay with advertisements. But what bothers me is the connectivity of Youtube to other services Google owns. I'm worried that Tumblr will now follow suit. But one thing that confuses me is that you said Tumblr is the only thing that Yahoo could afford, yet Yahoo has a lot of money. I suppose that it does, but couldn't that make the purchase... kinda risky?
