Hey guys, quick question.

What quality / codec / resolution are you using when encoding video for stepmania? For years I have been using koepi-xvid with 1200kbps + 640 x 480 but now in era of HD screen I think that such quality is unacceptable now.

So what are your point of view on this?

I'll usually tell you x264 and the quality is up to you based on file size. I usually try to do at least 3000kbps or better, depending on the video content. If there's a lot of movement and motion then I may up it a bit. I typically go no higher than 20K.

Don't mean to hijack your thread but I have a question relating to this...

If I'm using Sony Vegas to cut music videos for my files, what's the best setting to save them at so they aren't too big to upload? Is there another program that you use after to decrease the size? Sony Vegas is notorious for saving video files in really big file sizes.

Use VirtualDub if you need something of an intermediary. That's what I typically use.

Codec-wise I either load up on CCCP or K-Lite. One or the other. x264 seems pretty common anymore.

Or use Virtual Dub as a primary. Sure, you sacrifice fades, but KONAMI doesn't use them either, so authenticity bonus points! Tongue

Actually, with the right plugins for VDub, you can make even that work...

I use Avidemux as an alternative to Virtualdub. With a little maths (and a pad of paper), it makes makes it a lot easier to cut videos in a way that corresponds to the music cuts.

Avidemux isn't bad at all, especially when you're trying to pull apart or create MP4s...

...it's just I deal with AVIs a lot more in that regard.

Depending on the version, 1080p will likely slow down the game a bit, so I stick with 1280x720 when possible. If that's not the case, I uprez whatever it is to 640x480 (for fullscreen/4:3 videos) or 640x360 (for widescreen/letterbox/16:9+ videos). Depending on how the initial 3000kbps save goes, I might then decide to resave in 4500 or 6000kbps.

720p for HD.
