"Wow, 4 types of corn!" |
I'll be updating this post as I get moments to rub all this information together. It is a huge mish-mash of stuff. I'll link to the company product pages and lineups but point up what had larger displays or drew more crowds or had more hype (or was something I noticed at random)
(I'll upload pics later)

Well, the Tokyo Game Show 2012 is happening again. Each year feels like "more of the same". But I always make a tradition of seeing what is released each year (even if I mostly only have time for mobile games now since console gaming with 2 small kids in the house is damned near impossible anymore)
Generally, the crowds all seemed the same size; just as crowded. The camera nazis were there trying to stop photos but like last year it wasn't as bad as it had been in previous years (when Squeenix staff tacked a photographer, classic)
Hardware-wise, the only new thing was the PS3 Slim Slim

Software
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Monster Hunter 4 (3DS)
http://capcom.co.jp/monsterhunter/4/index.html
Looks like more of the same but I think the mechanics were tweaked and everything seems to run a bit smoother and look a bit better. Since this is such a massive series I imagine it will sell well no matter what. I like these games but I can't really get into them, or rather put the insane time commitment you need to get anywhere in the game.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Bravely Default
http://www.square-enix.co.jp/tgs12/bdff/
This was a neat surprise. It looks like a PS1-era RPG and it uses the job system similar to FF5 (or FF3) with different jobs and abilities to go around. I wouldn't mind a nice, straightforward RPG on the go like this if the final version shapes up as nicely as the promo seemed.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
DMC (Devil May Cry)
http://capcom.co.jp/tgs2012/title_dmc.html
It looked nice, played nice, but I couldn't help but think it was all more of the same. The perspectives and details on some of the enemies, especially the bosses, made this one stand out, though.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance
http://www.konami.jp/mgr/jp/
Looks sharp, but it comes off a bit too much like Devil May Cry. I guess if you wanted more action in that sense...
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Zone of the Enders HD
http://www.konami.jp/zoe_hd/jp/
This seemed to be hyped more than it was popular but if you are a fan of the series, the HD mix looks really nice. I'm not sure on new features, etc.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Mix
http://www.square-enix.co.jp/tgs12/khhd/
Okay, this has, KH Final Mix, Chain of Memoires, and 365/2 Days on it...Meh, I would have liked KH2 Final Mix HD and the PSP one remade but oh well.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Yakuza 1&2 HD
http://tgs.sega.jp/2012/data/lineup/ryu1_2hd
This looks much better this time around, but if you have already played this to death there is the next title...
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Yakuza 5
http://tgs.sega.jp/2012/data/lineup/ryu5
With each release the city and people get more and more realistic and it becomes more immersive and I don't see the trend stopping here (though honestly the fighting sequences always played a bit hokey, at least to me). I am not sure on the story details right now.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
DJMax Technika Tune (Vita)
http://www.cyberfront.co.jp/title/djmax_technika/
This always had a cult following and for what it is worth, this looks and plays really nice. I can't comment on the music selection ATM.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Pheonix Wright 5:
http://capcom.co.jp/tgs2012/title_gs5.html
Although I never really got into this series, the fans there made it clear there is still a lot of steam left in this series.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Professor Layton Choubunmei (DS/3DS)
http://www.layton.jp/choubunmei/
I love the Layton games, and this one looks like a lot of fun.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Professor Layton and the Mystery Room (iOS)
http://www.layton.jp/mysteryroom/#movieSec
This is one I'd like to try out on my iPhone on the way to work. I'm curious how well it translates to the iOS platform.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Symphonica (iOS)
http://www.square-enix.co.jp/tgs12/symphonica/
Nothing really known about this other than it is another music game for the iOS coming soon (this fall)

Hmm apparently according to this http://buzzap.jp/news/20120920-xperia-jubeat-plus-tgs2012/ KONAMI shows jubeat plus on Xperia devices (Android soon?) and jubeat saucer as well.

Yeah, they had Jubeat on Xperia there. I'm not sure how it compares to the iOS version since I wasn't able to get my hands on it with so many others there.
The Jubeat Plus site mentioned the Xperia version was at TGS as well:
http://www.konami.jp/products/touch_jubeatplus/
Anyone notice on the Bravely Default main site ( http://www.square-enix.co.jp/bdff/ ) they have a funky web perspective thing going with the characters. That effect is on the Monster Hunter 4 page as well I noticed.

Nintendo doesn't have a presence at the Tokyo Game Show (they debut their products at E3 and they are represented by software makers at the TGS) and Microsoft did not attend this year (not totally surprising; Xbox/360 is irrelevant in Japan)
So far there is no news of any overseas release but I imagine there will be; it is just a question of how many months later.
