I've been playing DDR for a number of years now, and I'm fairly decent at SP (up to 16s).

I want to start playing DP. I've tried before but I am rather ungraceful; I'm not sure if it's because I am rather short (5ft) and I can't reach some arrow combinations in time. I don't know what songs to try out or what difficulty/speed to start on. I've only seen DP in person a handful of times on Heavy no less.

Suggestions?

I also just started playing on doubles. I started on light but by the end of the day, i started playing standard. This might be aided by my height, but i don't know what mix you're on, but if you're on Extreme, I would do Yozora No Muko Standard and Little Bitch Light. I also thought Happy Wedding was a good one (but i like that song, sooooo that might be my bias there)

Holic and THE REFLEX are good places to start with Doubles basics.

Just practice. I'm short too (5'5'') and I got the hang of it practicing the songs by difficulty. You can always use the bar too.

But.........he's just starting out..........maybe when he gets the basic routines and patterns in doubles down and starts to improve he can shoot for that, but not when he's just starting out

Try low bpm songs first so you can get the hang of changing from one pad to the other. As you get better, try faster songs.

Honestly if hes great on single (he sound better than me) then he should start with a simple song that teaches him how to move around on both. It was my first song on doubles and still easier than alot of songs on Standard mode.

But doubles is a completely different monster though. It takes time and pratice. If it didn't, i'd be trying to pass 9's on doubles. It's gonna take a little while unless he gets the hang of it really quickly

I'm a she. Cool

There isn't an Extreme for miles... but I am close to an X. It's just the whole "I'm going backwards to reach steps" or crossovers that goes across both pads that honestly gets me and 9 times out of 10, I'm hitting brackets or spaces.

Oh! My sincere apologies. Practice will help with that sort of problem. The worst thing you can do is quit.

oh... i'm really sorry Blushing

But i know how you feel, its the same with me. You would just have to play simple songs (like what people already told u) and get use to it.

You pretty much have to know where you are on the pad at all times, and have confidence that you will step in the correct spot.

Also, if you need to practice those cross pad crossovers, try playing slower (120-140bpm) songs in the mid difficulty range. (Old scale 5-7) Beware of songs such as D2R, which is rhythmically the same as Single, but features some crosspad patterns that will trip you up if you don't know what to do.

I knew I mastered crosspad crossovers the day I played AAHeavy sightread and knew exactly what to do.

play the songs you like. Hopefully there are new skills to be learned in the songs you like. You'll be more interested in learning them if its for a song you like.

Also what they said, start with slower songs and then change to songs that are streamy but easy, Jane Jana comes to mind.

One thing to add. Always place your feet at the right(1P pad) and left(2P pad) panels of the pad if you plan to sightread songs you haven't played before so that you can step the first arrow easily unless you know where the first arrow will appear.

I don't know examples of Standard charts that have good crossovers, but for Heavy, JANEJANA is pretty good. Oh, and it's quite slow (128 BPM).
I'm a DDR player, but never make a AAA.
No, I'm not a IIDX player, but I'm a BMS player.
No, I'm not pnm player, and I haven't play pnm simulator yet.

You can also play Holic. It doesn't have crossovers but you'll get the hang of changing from one pad to another with it.
