So I am in the works of coordinating a Team Tournament at a local arcade in Knoxville, TN. The idea seems to be drawing some interest but I'm running into a slight issue. This isn't a thread about the event so much as it is about how to solve this issue.
The idea is that teams of 2 compete in a match of 4 songs. Each member of the team plays 2 songs and the combined score is used to determine the winner of the match. Each song is chosen at random and each player can decide if they will be the one that plays a song up to the moment of the first arrow hitting.
The only issue is preventing 2 higher skilled players pairing up against 2 lower skilled players. Two possible solutions were thought of:
-Players play a qualifier round. The scores are used to rank each player into a higher/lower ranking. The higher players are paired with the lower players randomly. The only issue I have here is people are placed into "awkward" pairings where they may not really want to participate with said person.
-Lower skilled players are allowed to choose the higher skilled players. Only issue is a higher ranked player throwing their qualifier in order to get on the lower rank in order to be paired with a favorable high end player.
I'm looking for any suggestions on providing a balanced way of matching teams while still promoting lots of fun.

How about have the 2 players on the same team play at once. (one on player one, the other on player 2) Then after they play their 2 songs, you add up the scores then the next team plays 2 songs. This way you have both teammates going at once. I say that because I can see where a lower skilled player will just let the higher skilled player play.
As for members I would say have a lottery type deal. The highest skilled player after the qualifier round would have 1 name in a hate as 2nd best would have 2 then 3rd having 3 and so on. Then the highest skilled player picks first. He has a high chance of getting someone lower skilled but a low chance of getting someone high skilled. However the issue with that is your tournament could be decided by luck rather then skill.
I'll give this a few hours of thought but I'll have something in mind. I do like the idea.

As in the lower skill player lets the higher skilled player play all 4 songs or the lower skill player just lets his opponent win?

You could do it where one player has to play at least 2 songs. Then that adds strategy to it. It's it's a lower skilled player then do you play your lower skilled player in not risk the better player using up his 2 rounds? This way you can have lower Vs lower and Higher Vs Higher. A factor of the victory would have to do with how well you play your best teammate when you need to play him.

I actually took part in a sort of team tournament a few years ago. The organizer tried to balance it out by putting the highest seed with the lowest seed and giving people a handicap based on how they seeded. Players were also assigned to play on hard or expert.
The problem with the matching was that the lowest seeded people held back the highest seeded people too much, so they didn't have a competitive chance.
Having some players on hard and some on expert was a problem when two hard players went against two expert players and picked Monolith.
Anyway, I think each player on the team should be forced to play 2 of the 4 songs. For the tie breaker, a random player is chosen.
I'm not sure of a good way to solve the pairing problem.

I definitely plan on forcing all players to play 2 of the 4 songs and having the songs be random on Expert, no choosing songs at all (Extra Stage is simply nullified unless there's an unlikely event of a tie since we're using combined score of all 4 songs, with Marvelous timing ties would be extremely rare).
