When the heck did these start showing up everywhere? It seemed unheard of when Extreme came out, but it seems every other song these days has freeze arrows in their beginner charts. When did this start, anyway? You think they should be in beginner mode?

tbh even if it's your first time, surely by looking at the freeze arrows, you'd eventually somehow think "I guess you have to hold these down." They're not a hard concept to grasp at all.

Newer games like DDR 2010 for the Wii have one screen before playing that tells you every time before you play how and what freeze arrows are.

Most new players I see know they're supposed to do something with Freezes, but most of them usually just keep stepping repeatedly.

I have no problem with freeze arrows in beginner, players need to learn how to read the basic arrow types sooner or later.

No big deal with Freeze Arrows in beginner charts, not like it's a hard concept to understand.

I think they first appeared around the DS Fusion era (EXTREME in America, Festival in Japan). I'd have to start looking at songs in release order to know for sure.
I don't see a problem with them in Beginner, they aren't in all Beginner charts so it's like how there are 8th notes in some, not all, Basic charts.
Also, Valkyrie Dimension :V

If you ask me, freeze arrows in Beginner aren't as bad as jumps in Beginner. A friend of mine actually turned off the freezes in some light songs because they confused him and/or made him turn in awkward positions or something.

My thoughts on the purpose of Freeze arrows in Beginner: "Get the F*** off the center!"

If the song isn't to speed and not overloaded of steps (*calling Butterfly beginner!*) , this could be a training to about freezes. But it will need to be on a good place and match something on a song.
There is no many songs with it, I have to check ...

This.
They have to learn that they can press anything and not get a negative result like GH where strumming for fun is a bad thing.

The only problem I see is that beginners would mess up due to bad arcade pads, thus they don't know why their freeze arrow failed on them so they repeatedly hit it to not lose the combo, whatever.

So, the conclusion is, when it comes to learning how to play DDR, not only you have to know kinds of arrows and gameplay technique, you also have to have good arcade machine (espescially pads), right?
