Info on the mysterious service button would help.
Okay, listen up. Family owns a small arcade. We've got a DDR Extreme, upgraded to a MAX2 mix. I've played with codes and entered everything. Basically, I know what test mode is, but none of the other buttons on the operator panel. I have a general idea about what event mode is and do know how to activate it, but not how to deactivate it. I want to learn how to set the machine to the best possible settings, what the test button it, and more about the service button and event mode. Help?
Oh, one more thing. What's the official name of this :cha: difficulty?

On Stepmania? You'll find it on the options. Most likely the machine option, I believe.

On arcade, just take it to the options menu, hold the service button, and press game mode, but I doubt that's what you need.

In DDR you press Test (not Service) to enter the service menu, and when you go back out into GAME MODE it'll revert back to FREE PLAY. It'll only enter EVENT MODE if you have free play enabled, with the Service button pressed upon selecting GAME MODE.
tl;dr enter and leave the service menu

lets you change the game options?
The only submenus you ought to pay attention to are GAME OPTIONS, COIN OPTIONS and GAME MODE. Generally I'd set it to 4 songs, joint prem, lifebar 3. And oh yeah make sure it's fully unlocked as well so people can whore Maxx Unlimited.

Joint premium: 1 credit versus, as opposed to 2.
3 lifebar. On a scale of 1-8, lifebar difficulty is at 3.

I've been in the service menu too many times to count, mostly to activate Event Mode.
Am I that sad that I remember BWUVHBK-KVXFXYA almost by heart?

And in later versions it allows people to play doubles mode for 1 credit. Although unforunately as I found out a couple weeks back, only in Supernova 2 and later.
But yeah it'd be nice if people could play an easier extreme machine for a pretty cheap price, it'd certainly make it an attractive machine to play. Particularly round here.
First there was something like Standard, Trick and Maniac, then "Oni" was added. Then I believe it changed to Beginner, Basic, Standard, Expert and Oni, then Oni just changed to be Challenge. Now it seems to have shifted back to Oni.
Just in terms of names of difficulties I mean.
So yeah it means Oni or Challenge mode. Like erm Expert if you're talking Extreme or previous or Expert+ if talking Supernova or later?

This is incorrect. You are able to play doubles through Joint Premium on an Extreme machine. That was the only way I was able to play 5 songs for one quarter back at my previous job.

Sorry, I meant that while it is possible there's no way to turn on either or setting. Its both or nothing which causes some op's to shy away from it.

That, and the default is JP off (and most ops don't bother changing any settings on a machine aside from the "number of coins per credit" bit). Doubles premium should so be enabled by default, IMO.
The only buttons inside the front door of the cab are volume controls (bass and full-range), test (adds a credit), service (accesses service menu) and power. Plus degauss (use if the monitor has weird bluish and reddish tints in the corners if the cab has been moved) and the monitor adjustment controls if you have a JP cab.
