For lack of a more age appropriate word, I'm just going to call it Shoe Wearing.
I was down at the strip, and there was this girl playing DDR at an arcade I was going to, and she was pretty good, except that she couldn't play a song without Wearing.
I think using speed mods does make the game easier, and adds a necessity for heightened reflexes, although you could just go the long way and memorize a song to freak people out by playing that song on invisible. I personally won't use them unless it's impossible to read the notes otherwise.
But the need for Wearing is like a trashy romance novel telling itself that it teaches sound virtues. I mean, SURE, you CAN say you're capable of beating a level 13 demon, but where's the pride in that if you can't do it without Wearing the shoes?
YES, I do know that people who CAN beat demons without Wearing prefer to wear anyway. YES, I'll acknowledge than even if I wear, I can't do more than an 16, and that's pushing it. But I could beat 15s WITHOUT Shoe Wearing (some of them).
I bring this up because although the girl I mentioned was nice, the two Chinese-ish kids with spiky hair and white sweaters made fun of me for playing my custom level 8s and 9s freestyle, even though they could hardly beat Paranoia Survivor while Wearing.
I apologize if there was a past post, but I never read it, never saw it, and it'd obviously be past the 6 month point since it's not even in the first post.

I think I can only do 7s or 8s (10 scale) barefoot on a machine, but if I wear shows I can do up to 13s (X-scale). Shoes really protect my feet and I won't leave a trail of crimson blood leaving the arcade

Well, I never played with shoes, always play barefoot.
I Tried to play with shoes and it slip alot...LOL
So, maybe I'll try again with proper shoe..
Anyways I can clear 13s and some 14s without shoe

Strangely liking the demi-satire here. But anyway, I play with shoes on because knowing the state of our machine it's probably safer to play on a bed of nails barefoot than those pads.

12's new scale are still my limit without Wearing. I can pass 14's new scale if I give in, though, so there's some small incentive.
While we're talking about footwear (albeit as a euphemism), does anybody else find it funny that Konami's soft pads come with warnings not to play in stocking feet? I want to know how anybody plays totally barefoot - the pad doesn't want to leave one's soles...

My AC has a rule about playing bare foot, as in you can't. Doubt they enforce it

I will laugh at the day when people start getting crap from elitists for not only playing while grabbing a bar or using speed mods, but for being Shoe Wearers. 
I greatly hurt my feet trying to play Paranoia -Respect- barefoot once. Very bad idea, though I choose that over trying to play it with flip flops.

It's all subjective. Some people prefer to play DDR in super ultra mega tight skinny jeans, while others prefer playing in shorts. Some people prefer to go no bar on every single song, while others will hug the bar on every single song, etc the list goes on.
