DDR X2: Probably Zero for the blood (heck, they edited out blood already on DDR X CS JP from the IIDX version). "All gettin' hosed tonight" is probably from So What.

Personally I hate the ERSB rating system. They take things WAY to seriously. They think every kid will understand every reference in every song and will be stupid enough to be influenced by it. I look at the ERSB team as a bunch of extremely paranoid parents

It's pretty much the same idea as the Parental Advisory label on CD's; "censor" it in the least effective way possible. People are going to find ways to get things no matter how many stickers or ratings you put on them.

Universe 3 was the only DDR title since 2005 (when E10+ was introduced) NOT rated E10+, as it was rated E instead.

Hey, be glad you don't live in Australia, where many games get banned for various (stupid) reasons). See: Left 4 Dead 2, Manhunt 2, GTA San Andreas. Note that all those titles were modified for "consumption" in Australia.

Anyone know why DDR Ultramix 2 was changed from E to T? (This was before E10+ was made)

I still haven't figured it out, and I have an original copy rated E (and also explains why UM2 isn't advertised on the back of the UM3 and 4 instruction manuals.)

I think T for almost DDR games and E for DDR kids version.

Remember, DDR Disney Channel censored Paranoia words and replaced it with P.N MAX words.

Maybe Konami didn't want scare young audience with paranoia word.

E10+, you mean. It's right up there. Anyway, all the EU ones are 3+. Even SN which got away with accidentally putting 'shit' in one of the lyrics.

The long story is that Konami America licensed 'Highs Off You' for DDR Extreme CS (USA), and even asked the artist (Mark Summers) if he could supply a music video for it. Apparantly, nobody at any point actually listened to the song, and when the ESRB asked Konami to submit a list of inappropriate lyrics, which they obviously didn't, and as a result, we got this :

http://hardgamer.virgula.uol.com.br/images/uploads/20080107_ps2ddrextreme.jpg

A game with an "E for Everyone" rating, featuring someone clearly, and loudly talking about "fucking" someone else up.

As a result, the ESRB went crazy. When the PS2 version of In The Groove was submitted for an ESRB rating, the ESRB sent them back a list of over 200 reasons why the game could not receive an E rating, all of which were lyrics. The final game did receive an E rating, and became a running joke in the Bemani community, because every song had to be butchered to the point that the lyrics were mostly gibberish, and the steps no longer went to the music.

In The Groove (and I think Pump It Up also) games all had to install an operator setting that let you enable or disable every single song on the machine, incase several weeks after the game's release, someone decides that the song is "inappropriate" in some way.

edit : To put this in context, The ESRB demanded that they censored the word "dark" out of Charlene..

First time I heard of this change. Most of the changes were from T or M to one higher, like GTA San Andreas or Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.

Let's see what's wrong with this post.

The ESRB never sent Roxor/Red Octane a list of "200 reasons" why the game couldn't receive an E rating. The censoring was done by Red Octane, NOT Roxor, in order to receive the E rating. In the end, they were just paranoid and wanted to reach more customers with the lower, more "family friendly" E rating. Most of the censored songs had no reason to be changed. Songs changed were Land of the Rising Sun, Charlene, Mouth, ROM-eo & Juli8, Normal, Bubble Dancer, My Favourite Game, and PA Theme. Yes, most of the censoring was done HORRIBLY and unprofessionally but it was done.

In The Groove has never had a restrictions menu for operators to lock/unlock songs. You're thinking of Pump it Up, in which most of the recent releases have included the feature for operators to "lock" songs that they or their customers may feel to be offensive.

Here's Charlene. You can hear audio altering at :26, :37, :41, 1:31, 1:54, 2:07, 2:10,
I call it audio altering because it's barely changing it. In most parts, they just added echo to distort the noise a bit.

I'd guess U2 would be down to either Midnight Special (gun stuff) or G2 ('fuckin' beat yeah'...or whatever.) Either way, if it was because of G2, that may explain why Guidecca's vocal sample in UM3 was changed.

I heard that Roxor did the editing, at the request of the publisher, who were given the list of objective content from the ESRB. I heard this from Ryan McKanna, although it was obviously a couple of years ago.

There's no distortion used. They replaced the bar of music containing the offending words with another similar bar of music used later in the song. That's why the lyrics come out as gibberish, and the audio seems to jump.

Charlene's a bad example, because they replaced syllables with other syllables. Land Of The Rising Sun is a better demonstration of how they did it.

They censor the word "girlfriend" in one of the Anet songs.

Land Of The Rising Sun (ITG CS)

It's all about being in the Land Of Town!

I can't even remember what the line so offensive, they had to completely remove it, was originaly meant to be :{
