"ARR JOO LEADY??" |
Cross-posted from DDR Online Community.
_______________
How would you feel if in a future version of DDR, a new, optional type of "extra steps" were added to stepcharts, even preexisting ones?
These wouldn't count -against- your scores/combos/life should you neglect them (and can even be disabled for purists' sake - or in fact, would only be enabled if you turned them ON), but would maybe result in a small additional "bonus" for nailing them in addition to the normal routine? For instance, a verse or two in some light charts would play more like standard ones with these inserted, and the Expert charts would result in more deep and complex routines that might actually change the stepping flow a little bit in the more "spurty" or easy parts.
I can understand *not* using these (or not using them much) in boss-level charts, because in those, you may want every step "to count," right?
About the only good comparison I can draw, is something sorta like the "guitar solo" system in Rock Band. It's not like the entire stepchart gets modified/complexified... just a section or two, either during an otherwise really easy part, or where the song would be most fitting for a big, showy climax.
Maybe it could also be used turn parts of "plain stepping" sequences (on any difficulty) into freeze-stepping sequences, jumping sequences, or skipping sequences, as well. But that's more like StepMania's auto-generating "insert" mods, and isn't *quite* what I mean... I'm talking about deliberately-planned steps/routines, here. Plus, it's a "sort of safe" way to practice up for a higher difficulty level.
(In fact, it could be as simple as playing one verse or so near the end on the next difficulty, and simply adding an extra chart to that verse, for when it's at it's maximum [Heavy/Challenge].)

So...copying the whole ITG idea of adding steps by putting mods. <_<
Eh.

Nothing autogen about it. Just inserting an "optional step type" into existing data, and having a switch that toggles it on and off. More like "the opposite of mines."
Or, if you want to compare ITG... like a modifier for ITG that switches mines into "more steps." Does that make more sense?

That actually sounds pretty cool, but it would only work if DDR had hands and essentially turned into ITG.

They did that on Extreme2. Songs like Speed over Beethoven and like 8 others had extra steps that were annoying when you had memorized the arcade steps and tried to freestyle them at home.

"I forgot my mantra..." |
Why not just use challenge charts if the step routine difficulties are too different between
?
I'd prefer that...

I'd prefer that...

Nightime: I think you have an interesting idea, but nobody is picking up quite what you mean.
In stepmania, it's possible to construct a course where the songs have extra steps in them. The songs only have those extra steps when played in that course, and you have to place them when making the course. If people don't like the extra steps in the song, then they don't play it in that course.
Is that the kind of thing you are thinking of?

I think he means that for every stepchart, he wants to see a modified version with extra steps that would appear through the use of a modifier.
So say I want to play Basic with the extra steps, I would go into Song Options and turn them on. Then I would be playing the same chart, but with those extra steps.

I kind of already add my own steps between gaps in streams. It sometimes allows me to avoid awkward turns and spins, like on Gorgeous 2012.
But Extreme 2 had "hidden" steps. Extra steps added that weren't visible. Every so often there would be a clue unlocked to show the location of it, but I'm not too keen on extra hidden steps.

Those hidden steps are only available in the Dance Master Mode. Stepping on them gives you an extra thousand points.

I would have to say no on this one. If this goes through, I think KONAMI would ruin the thing. Sorry, but no.

Oh come on, we don't need another person like me saying Konami can never do things right.Besides, it doesn't sound like he's suggesting it as something Konami should or will do, just as an idea to see what people think of it.
Having extra planned steps be turned on by a special mod sounds cool to me. Though really, that's what edit difficulties and such are for. I'm fine with playing an edit that's 90% the same steps as the original, with just a few steps added in a few spots to change the flow.

That's how I started making edits, though I also used the Mirror feature to make the steps look "new" >_>
If you take a close look at Venus, Konami also does the same thing.

Exactly! And yeah... it's mostly just putting an idea out there.
Maybe charts that include hands, or 3-4 arrow jumps; but optionally, this way.
