Does anybody know when the final, official, 100% complete release of StepMania 4.0 will be? They keep saying they're working out so many bugs, but it's been, what, a year? All these alpha versions too...
Can anyone provide information besides this from their Web site?

There is not yet an official release of StepMania 4.0, but users can build the source from our CVS tree to test out its new features.
For those of you who don't like to mess with source code, we have started created intermediate "snapshot" builds of the latest code in CVS. You can find them available for download below.
The latest build, however, is the third alpha release. This includes the new theme, sounds, arrows, and a cleaner interface altogether.

I remember when I had just started editing charts on 4.0 that I worked so hard on some steps and it replaced them all with random arrows, mostly 192nds that didn't show up with Note. I blamed it on the bugs of 4.0, but I realized later that I had somehow triggered Record mode. Of course, that triggering may have been a bug, too.
There was also:
-Not being able to play Edit difficulty
-Having to reset Marvelous to on
-Having to remap the keys so I could play on Doubles
-A lot of other resetting upon each load
-192nd not showing up with Note, like I previously mentioned
I remember waiting until June (I can't remember if it was 2007 or 2008) for the next alpha release, hoping it would imrpove, and when it came around, I thought, "I waited this whole time for THIS?"
I just gave up on 4.0 after that.
For awhile, I would play 3.9 on an old Dell computer (3.95 wouldn't work for some reason), but I got annoyed with it because, well, it was old. Now, I play 3.95 on my new laptop.
The only downside is that it's not official, but it's everything 4.0 needs to be, but with 3.9 graphics, so I'd love to return to 4.0 once a 100% stable version is released.

Okay I'm pretty sure the first alpha of 4.0 came out around April Fools Day 2009, so maybe you're talking about CVS, which is like a super beta version of 4.0
From my understanding upon reading the stepmania forums is that right now they are releasing alpha stages, until 4.0 is ready for beta, and then when beta is finally done, the official, stable stepmania 4.0 will drop.
Stepmania 4 (the current alphas) are tons more stable than the CVS version but the Edit mode is still pretty rough. That's why people say it's clearly better to edit songs on 3.9
In other words, it's going to be awhile. I'm shooting for around early October/late August. This is just a guess.

I hate how these things take so long to develop. For example, we've been waiting for the most stable version of IE8 since Beta2 for almost a year. People are still saying it has a bunch of bugs.
And yeah, I was checking out StepMania 4.0 CVS probably at least a year ago, and it was okay at first. Then I closed it and came back to it, and it kept crashing everytime since then so I got rid of it.
But I might upgrade to 3.95 in the mean time. I hope your prediction is at least close, OMGTourretes.

I'm really reluctant to change versions once I've got used to one for years, so I probably wouldn't move to 4 until probably a few months after release.

I heard that the full release would be released a long time, but I think I might be wrong.

I might step up to version 4 once I get a new computer. As for now, 3.9 is fine.

3.9's currently pretty much all around better than 4.0. 4.0 has 192nd notes for edit mode, but I think that's the only upgrade about it.

Holy crap, 192nd notes?!
I'm looking forward to the final release of 4.0 though. What's the difference between 3.9 and 3.95? Is there any interface change or is it just how the program runs?

Spend some time writing code for a project which has over 10000 lines of code (which is still a small project), then reconsider that.If you haven't done that, you have no grounds to say, "Oh, these people should be done so much sooner!".

I've been using Stepmania 3.9+ since I found it. It also has roll support, along with a lot of extra niceties like player-side autoplay, 4.0 mods, extra scoring system options, additional fail types ("Fail AAA" makes you fail if you get a Great or lower), and wraparound menus in Edit mode. Also there are a lot more metric options, so you can finally make jumps count as 1 combo and stuff.
