I apologize if this is not in the right forum.
So the other day, my cousin bought a ps2...
And when I saw it I was like, woah, since I haven't seen that kind of PS2 and I want to know if that model exists.
Because not only is it smaller (big shocker), the place where you put the game disk is quite weird.
Here are some pics of it.
Top view

Box

Serial/Model No.

The "disk drive"

PS2 Travel Case, or the box of it. Note that its colored yellow, not faded white.

Back view.
So is this a real model?

It appears to be a variant on the PS2 slim.

Do all of the slim versions feature that kind of "disk drive?"
Edit: And there's still the matter of the model number since it's higher than that of the slim one.

Yep, I'll take pictures of mine to show you. Just give me a minute.
They did that so they can remove the CD drive. Cost and energy efficient. It took some time to getting used to though, but it's just like the PS1!
Edit: Good job! You found #2 out of 10. This one was a little easy. Try to find them all.

However, the PS2 slim is a BITCH to work swapmagic with IMO. Love the PS2 Phat!

Which is what worries me, it looks much like a PS1.
To DJ OMIY: As far as opinion is concerned, I actually prefer the "phat" one.

My uncle has one like that, I think it's called a fliptop (lol, though whats with the redness?
).
I remember seeing parts to mod that kind of PS2 at play-asia when I was trying to mod mine. Didn't look too hard install from what I remember.

I bought this PS2 around the time that Hurricane Katrina hit the US.
The last PS2s to made were the Silver series. The red one is rather old. Be happy that he doesn't have the silver model as those have hardware problems.
Edit: The slim PS2 should be easy to mod. Flip tops are like CD players. If you look at the cover, you should see some "teeth". When you close it, those "teeth" push a button that tells the system its ok to run the CD. you could easily trick it by grabbing a toothpick and pushing the button yourself, though you would have to hold it down.

He bought a red colored one. He said there were other colors to choose from but chose red instead.
Oh, and I forgot to mention. He had difficulty playing his PS1 games with that console. It seems it can't "read"
the discs even when he has taken good care of them. And it also has issues with the memory card, with saves getting corrupted and always prompting him to format the memory card.

I'd prefer that over any one-color color scheme!

If no one has noticed, I edited my previous post.
This is a link that may help out. I've read through it and it includes the model number but I don't see the CR anywhere.
That red model, is it PAL or NTSC?

It's NTSC. And we have done the same thing on a fat PS1, by inserting a spring of some sort on that button. And we didn't have to close the lid on those occasions.

Damn it!! It's NTSC?! It doesn't list that color on the website.
Crap man, you might wanna get another color if possible.
I'm looking at this page and it doesn't list anything relating to the color "Red".
whatever you do, avoid the silver one.

So that PS2 is funky.
What about for PAL, does it have a red color scheme?
And gee, I don't know if I could persuade him to exchange it for something else. I remember telling him to return a game disc (Tales of Eternia English for PS1, I'll tell you the weirdness of the PS1 here later) he bought since for something newly bought it hangs on some of the conversations.

I have no idea about the PAL systems. I'll get around to asking over at GameFAQs and the Sony forums to see if I could shed some light into this. But I do remember seeing red, and blue PS2s. I just find it weird that they don't have those listed....unless they were mere paint jobs with the same hardware.
As for the problem with reading the PS1 games:
the problem may be the game disc itself as there are some that just won't work. My Um Jammer Lammy, for example, will freeze up on stage 5* on the PS2 but it reads it fine on my PS1, so the disc-read errors are dependant on the discs. However, if you have another PS2 lying around, try the PS1 game in question on that PS2 to see if it's either the disc or the system.
* = you know, the stage where you have to make your guitar out of wood. (casino here, casino there, casino in my hair!! lawl)
Edit:
That's the other part I forgot to point out. It could be the laser. Is the PS2 refurbished or brand new?

Edit:
Quote: PS2 Hardware - Board FAQ
Both problems are essentially the same: your PS2's laser is either worn out or has drifted out of alignment. Since I have no experience with opening the PS2 up and fiddling around inside, I won't try and explain the procedure myself - instead, I'll hand you over to the good folks at Ars Technica:
http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars
By the way, I will NOT be held responsible for anything that might happen to your PS2 once you've opened it up.
If you don't like the sound of poking around in your PS2's guts, your only other option is to have it repaired. Either find a reputable local dealer who'll do it for you, or send it off to Sony. If it's within warranty, you'll get it fixed for free - if not, the fee is $75 USD, £55 GBP, and most probably around the same elsewhere. You'll find the technical support line for Sony in the back of most game manuals.

I'd assume it's a paint job, but things quirking up like that shouldn't happen a day after it was bought.
EDIT: I'd assume it's brand new.

If it's brand new then he should try to get a replacement as it may just be a faulty system

I'll try to reason it out with him, but it isn't likely that he'll follow my advice (like what happened above). and he's younger than me.
If there is anything more I could say, then I will.
Oh, and thanks for the help, tried looking it up myself but Google sometimes isn't very trustworthy.

Here's the link to the topic I created over at GameFaqs. If you have an account, you can track the topic to see if you get a response, or maybe add more details to it.
