Hi y'all! Name's Alyx but I go by Honk online, because its funny!
I wanted to make a forum on IIDX because I have a couple of thoughts and issues with the game.
For background, I've been playing since 2021 on a PS2 (with the CS controller and then the ASC in 2023). It was my only way to play IIDX until late 2023 when my mom took me to Round1 for my b'day. I was so ecstatic!!! Eventually, I was able to drill a few rounds monthly and practice at home for 30min. I've even studied play-styles and practiced using modifiers to better my skills.
Earlier this year, I found myself reaching a roadblock with the game. I injured my wrist from switching to SDVX and IIDX
Thus, I had to take a break from playing. Coming back from that was hard because every other arcade round had me advancing up a level; highest I went was 9, I can barely pass 7's now. Looking back, I can see how I ended up injuring myself. I don't play regularly but I DEFINITELY end up playing for up to 3 hours sometimes with a few 10min breaks in between. Now, I've been moderating my play time whenever I go and now I don't enjoy as much.
Firstly, I often overthink that my timing is off, even more since my injury. As a result, I tinker with the timing adjustment too much(only on the cabinets, not on PS2). In addition, I get easily discouraged when a song I like doesn't have a good difficulty range. For reference, I was over the moon playing Show Me All Your Love in SPH, but I wanna challenge myself a lil more. But, I can't because of how irregularly excessive my play time is. Lastly, playing Step-Up went from being fun and challenging to a chore mixed with dread. I try to have fun with the recommend songs(at lv. 8), but I end up running through the review folders.
It's hard to try and shift to another game since I can't get the same songs on SDVX(navigation sucks esp. with the timer
) or DDR(I would TOTALLY train to survive a challenge level of Show Me All Your Love) or DANCERUSH(it's fun but meh
), nor the same experience. Looking into the culture of IIDX and otoge in general doesn't comfort me about it either cuz competition seems to be a core element. Maybe I'm growing out of it, maybe it's fatigue, but I just feel a little hesitant going to play IIDX, both home and arcade.
So, what should I do? Have you had a similar experience? How do you push through/resolve?
