One sequence that always has me fumbling is, for example:
down right down right down left down left
The first four steps seem straight forward, using legs: left right left right, but now what? It seems like I should step on the down this time with my right foot so I can step on the left arrow with my left foot, but my left foot is already on the down. I always end up kind of hopping, and doing poorly at this sequence. Surely there's a better way to do this. ?

It depends on the speed. If it's 4ths (reds only) or so, just step on the down with your left foot as usual, but move your foot up to step on the left arrow. If it's 8ths (red-blue-red-blue...) and it's only at about 200 BPM max, I'd still doublestep. However, if it's any faster, I'd crossover.

Or other words try and turn your body 90 degrees. Up right Up right Up left Up left seems to be a little hard than the D,R,D,R,D,L,D,L. Just relax and you'll be alright.

Yeah, there are multiple ways to do that - it's mainly a style preference. I would suggest keeping your left foot on D the whole time, and hitting the L's with your right foot. (You do need to twist your hips to the left then to keep from squishing whatever you have between your legs, though). These crossovers come in handy on the beginning of AM-3P, among other places.
Another way to step that would be to keep your right foot on D the whole time, and start by hitting the R's with your left foot (left over right). In that case you would twist your hips to the right. The point to starting crossed over is that you would end standing normally (left on L, right on D) which is a better position if your next arrow is U. Of course, that means you'd have to read ahead that far.

I'd find myself doublestepping in that situation. I usually don't do crossovers if I have to face at an angle for more than a couple to steps. I'll try as much as I can, since doublestepping doesn't save me a lot of misses.

Once you think you really are good at TimeSpaceMage's method, try AM-3P Chaos Special! >:D

Crossover. Turn your body and after hitting DLDL you turn so your body faces away from the screen and hit DRDR like that.
