How to make videos work with simfiles

I found a bunch of the background videos for songs from ITG 3 and Rebirth but I can't figure out how to get these videos to work when I play the simfile back. I'm using Stepmania 5 if this helps. I would use OpenITG but it crashes before it can get to the main menu on my PC. Can anyone help?

Put the videos in the RandomMovies folder then select Random Movies under Appearance Options in game.

If you've downloaded videos for specific songs, you'll have to add them directly to the song folder, and then add them in through edit mode. And depending on how well the videos are cut, you might have to mess with the timing values directly in the simfile.

My Stepmania program doesn't have a random movies folder. Should I just go ahead and create one?

If you create a 'RandomMovies' folder in your base game folder and put all your videos in there, then the game will automatically recognise it if Random Movies are enabled in your appearance options, although your videos might be stretched/pillarboxed if they're 4:3 videos in a 16:9 theme.

For me, I had to find the RandomMovies folder in my application support folder rather than the game folder itself. However, I use a Mac, so the layout might be a bit different for you.

Yes I'm on a Windows PC. I'll check for the folder one more time and if it's not there I'll just create my own. Thanks again for the help everyone. Nice to know I can count on such pleasant people!

Ok so if anyone is still reading this, I created the random movies folder and placed one of the videos in the folder. I set the appearance option to Random Movies, and the background simply dims to black as the song is being played. It's an AVI file by the way. Is it possible I misnamed the folder by mistake?

As far as I can remember the Rebirth Videos are in Subfolders in RandomMovies folder, check this first, if the videos are not in the right folder the video won't play

The folder name is "In The Groove Rebirth" I don't have my PC with me, but I remember that Rebirth have a subfolder in RandomMovies, you can check the BGChanges in the SM Files, for example:

Here's another tip:

If you're trying to work a video on StepMania 3.9, .mp4 videos won't work. Only .avi videos. HOWEVER, on StepMania 5, all videos will most likely work.

He has hundreds if not THOUSANDS of original background videos for DDR, ITG, PIU.

Thanks. I actually am subscribed to his YouTube channel. It's certainly a good backup option if I can't find a direct download link to the original BGAs. Unfortunately, this would require me to rescript the SM files to read these videos instead of the original ones. Also, he posts most of his videos in 16:9 ratio, but a lot of the original videos were 4:3, so there may be serious distortion if used on my machine.

So, does this mean you don't have the original background videos, or did you just download them straight from his Youtube channel? If you have the original videos, I'd really be grateful if I could get a google drive link or something of them. Specifically, I really want/need the ITG Rebirth videos. Those are proving extremely challenging to find.

I just downloaded the videos from his channel and those are good enough for me. You don’t have videos for Rebirth 2 by any chance do you?

I'll look and see. I can't remember if ITG Rebirth 2 had its own videos or not.

Edit: I just checked and I never had ITG Rebirth 2 background videos. If you look at the SM file, it doesn't call out any BG Changes either. I don't think it ever had any. Or, if they did, that wasn't the version of the pack I ever owned.
