Ok well I'm creating a simfile and I pretty much got everything to start stepping it except for one thing: the name. It's in Japanese. My computer refuses to save simfiles with Japanese characters in it. I tried other formats then putting a .sm at the end, Stepmania then does not recognize it. I have seen other people able to put it in, but I just don't know how. So how can you get Japanese characters in a simfile name and get Stepmania to recognize it?

You can always put the japanese characters on the #TITLE line of the .sm using UTF-8 (Unicode).

edit: I misread the OP's post, sorry.

The simfile needs to have UTF-8 encoding for Japanese characters to show properly.
That can be set in the Save As menu in Notepad.
IIDX Rank: SP 九段 (7/8)/ DP 七段 (5/8); 1P Side player
SP 11* Clears: 132/150 (88.00%); 12* Clears: 23/96 (23.96%)
Has access to CS 9th-EMP+PB+US, uses extended KOCs.

You can always romanize the title on the files/folder, and put the japanese characters on the #TITLE line of the .sm.
I already had that. I was talking about inside the .sm file. If I try to save the .sm file as a 'text document (.txt)', it will say "You are about to save the document in a Text-Only format, which will remove all formatting". If I click yes to proceed, it replaces every Japanese character with a question mark.

Don't have that encoding formatConfused That's either if you are referring to Unicode Text Document by any chance

When you save the file on Notepad, look down where it says 'Encoding', and there it should be UTF-8 available as an option.
If it isn't, look if you have the japanese and asian languages support installed on your computer.

UTF-8 is a type of Unicode encoding.
