Actually, the 573 is based off of the PS1, and if I recall, games will kind of begin to boot in a PSX emulator, then complain about the lack of additional hardware (IO board, security dongles, flash cards, etc)/refuse to go any further... but it would be interesting to see what happens if someone could bypass those checks.

Then maybe an additional PSX bios is needed for audio then.
*or chip or just whatever.
Or maybe byte edit the ROM for 5 years just to have a compatible MAME audio chip work with it.

Man, NO.
The songs' audio files in the disc are encrypted and they are decrypted by the 573.
That's why only announcer sounds are played.
Such decryption isn't enabled yet. There's been some progress the last years but nothing definitive.

Technically, the 573 most likely does not do that, and probably delegates the actual task of decoding the music sound to the MAS 3507-D MPEG 1/2 decoder chip*... some specifications and documentation for said chip are actually readily available, and have been for some time (from the manufacturer's website). This makes me wonder if (since I assume the MAME team does insane amounts of research when it comes to proper emulation) it is a matter of time, not having the time (between life, and other machines taking precedence), and not so much the technical ability to emulate the chip. (or maybe a small amount of both?)
*Since the chip is specialized to that task of decoding MPEG1/2 audio, and it would be able to carry out the tasks, while allowing the 573 to focus on handling the other aspects of executing the game.
Also I'd imagine it makes sense that we only have audio samples playing, as they are a lot smaller, and probably as a result don't need to be compressed in the manner that bigger songs do - especially once you get to DDR EXTREME AC with its massive song list.

It's not that. Songs aren't compressed in any way, just encrypted. For DDR Extreme Konami simply used lower bitrate audio files to make them fit the game.
The audio samples are played because they're stored in the flashcard (and thus they aren't encrypted), while the audio files for the songs are in the CD.

I wonder, how hard would it be to convert audio from the MPEG format whose decoders are not yet working in MAME, to a format that IS supported, insert it into the game, then make a new MAME CHD to test it that would boot?
On another forum, while Google-fu-ing, I saw someone claim to have success in using a similar method (if not the same method, essentially) in making games from 3rd Mix on worki in MAME closer-to-correctly. The lack of productive replies makes me think he threw up his hands in frustration due to the few he got being rather unhelpful, and/or confused.
Obviously, it;'d be better if MAME supported the game hardware, compared to having to hack a workaround in place, but it would be fun to try.
I am tempted to liken it to how, despite the lack of ability to convert audio into the proper SVAG ADPCM format for PS2 games, custom music works if you just convert the audio into ADPCM, despite obvious differences with regards to PS2 based hardware, versus the PSX hardware the Bemani 573 is based on..

Sorry for bumping this inactive thread but I found these in reddit and these were posts just a few days ago from now.

So, uh yeah. Anyone pulled this off?

Now just need the files to make that work.
Oh and with that implemented, does this mean that Dancemaniax can now be played as well? Thanks for the post.

Yes, I tried dmx2ndMIXJP. You only need to select Dancing Stage EuroMix rom to remove the buzzing sound everywhere. Timing for both bgm and visually in-game is perfect.

Never thought I'd see the day when we finally get DDR and other System 573 games in the BEMANI line to get to a playable state like this... Keep up the good work, whoever is responsible for this breakthrough!

I was so happy when I found this out. Already had a go at messing about with the game memory and testing things out.
For instance, the fact that it seems the stepdata loaded into memory only changes 1) when it is the player's first set, 2) when the player played a song, then picks another, or 3) when a song is loaded for the demo in the attract sequence, all info gleaned thanks to this development in MAME, allowed me to mess with stepdata to some hilarious results. For instance... MAX 300 with every step / freeze replaced with a quad (L+D+U+R) is fucking hell!

Or, he can just install one of the recent nightly builds in the meantime, until the official release that is.

I get an error 147 for 3rd, 4th and Solo 2000.
"Checksum error. If you have the latest CD-ROM, please replace. Turn off the power and insert installation cassette. Set DIP-SW4 to "OFF", then turn on the power and reinstall CD-ROM."
The rest that works stutters though. Don't know if it's my RAM or the emulator.

Do recent nightly builds really exist? Unless if you mean compiled and shared via discord.

I think that was emulator, you need to "change the cd" (in emulator) and not the switch, open the menu pressing tab, Go to slot device, change game to instal and after the instalation was completed change again: instal to game, press F3 or reset and enjoy your DDR 4TH or 3RD.
