Discuss everything related to Eurovision 2016 in
here.
Pretty surprised no thread has been made about this. SF1 is tonight!
(I'm still contemplating on staying up at 2am to watch this live, idk)
Semi Final 1
Semi Final 2
Big 5 + Sweden
I think people have stated their faves in the past so I'll do that:
(I just hope he can sing well),

Also, I think the new Melfest-style voting is gonna be interesting.

I was planning on doing a song-by-song review of the album yesterday but I...well...forgot.
It'll be either today or tomorrow, I think. General consensus is "better than 2015 but the stand out single tracks aren't as good", I think.

This year is problematic for me... even though I'm supposed to be hyper excited just because it's in my hometown of Stockholm, when I listened to the songs that are participating I couldn't find a single one that I'd be super impressed about... except for Romania. Ironically, they were disqualified. Normally when I judge the songs, I go with a 0-5 grade system. And no one of the songs managed to get a 5 from me, and only six managed to get a 4. The majority also got grades between 0-2 for me. So it goes without saying I hope there'll be better songs next year.

First semifinal is today, second is Thursday, biggun's on Saturday.
Genuinely impressed by this semifinal so far, San Marino notwithstanding. Some really good songs are going to miss out on the final, I feel.

I didn't catch it live, I was too tired I guess.
SF1 was a bloodbath. Some strong acts were bound to miss out.
I'm genuinely excited that Czech qualified. Shame Iceland and Estonia missed out. Especially Iceland, I thought it's impressive but I understood that it'll just be compared to Russia. Also holy shit Greece finally missed out.
The title typographies were awesome. I like Iceland's with their spinning × and Sweden's (this is a leak) with their use of negative space. I miss the flags, tho. At least the dandelion seeds were coloured by their flags (which is a given - except the Netherlands, which is orange).
SF2 was finished. Georgia wins best camera tricks.
(They even had to repeat that three times in the jury show because they couldn't get it right.)
DONA NOOOOOO I was rooting for you! :'(
Also, is this the first time no Nordic countries qualified through the semi? Sweden is all alone now.
I have a new favourite for the typography: Latvia. They utilised the fact that their country's name is made up of straight lines brilliantly.
Running order for the Grand Final has been revealed. According to the schedule by SVT, breaks will happen after Poland (12) and Spain (19). It also implies that the voting lines will be open for 42/43 minutes? That's quite a big window for Eurovision. Last year it was open for 28.

UK have it worse than you'd think, a show closing spot isn't all that powerful. Also Armenia are a dark horse and has a real danger of overshadowing them.
With my best optimist glasses on, I predict UK will finish 14th. And I will view that as a success.
Well, I was about 10 places out. Again. The downfall was AMAZING though. Despite how the UK did, this voting made it BEST. EUROVISION. EVER.

It was super-fun, but the outcome was decided entirely via politics, when everyone railed 'we don't want Russia to host it, how can we vote against them?', and so a terribly boring song with anti-Russian lyrics won out. That's a really shitty outcome for a contest that had 5-6 seriously great pop songs in the running :{
I thought it was legitimately the best and most exciting Eurovision ever, but I wonder how much of that is clouded by the best parts being 'Love Love Peace Peace', and 3 seconds of a random IIDX song. After Russia's score was announced, we turned it off so we could just have a Dr Bombay party instead.

Was hoping for Bulgaria to win, catchy song and great performance. Ukraine was alright.
also Sweden was pretty bad and I'm surprised it placed as high as it did

Poland rising from 25th to 6th in one go basically proves that Jesus is alive and living in Wrocław.

So
won. Quite a unique champion. Second in televoting, second in jury voting, yet it won.
Also, pretty interestingly: Australia would've won under 2013 rules. Breakdowns below:
Also, whoops: Danish Jury B ranked the entries in the reverse order, thus putting Australia last in her rankings while the other 4 members put Australia first. This is unlikely to be corrected, but even if it does, it won't change the placings, just the number of points. Ukraine's lead over Australia would've been 14 points fewer than how it is now, leaving a 9-point difference between them.

Also, pretty interestingly: Australia would've won under 2013 rules. Breakdowns below:
Grand Final voting breakdown:
Underline indicates a rank difference of 13 or higher between the two votes. Most disagreements happen with Poland (22), Malta (17), Austria (16), and Israel (14) and are likely to suffer the most under 2013 rules.
From what I watched, the jury voting looks the most apolitical in years. The disparity between 1st to 3rd is insane, though.
France did a pretty good job by delegating Amir's high notes to the backing vocals.
UK was annihilated with the televote. At least the juries are OK with it. If you're wondering, the 8 points are from Malta (1), Ireland (3) and Australia (4).
"Zero points to Czech Republic". Cue awws/boos. Same with The Netherlands.
The voting procedure is seriously exciting. A few technical errors here and there (the top 4/3/2 should've had split screens) but it's great for the most part.
I do have a problem: like a lot have mentioned in various forums, once your name is called, that's it for you. Your country's name will rise one final time, and then it won't rise anymore. It's a bit depressing when you think about it.
SF1 voting breakdown:
Underline for a difference of 9 ranks or more. Austria is the only country with that in this SF.
No change in qualifiers in both systems, but the NQ list has got some notable changes, particularly Montenegro.
The Czech Republic was rescued by the jury when the public wasn't too keen on them. The inverse happened with Austria.
Seeing San Marino getting 12th warms my heart a bit. Kudos to the staging team for making a shit song look votable.
My feels go to Estonia for finishing last. I really didn't expect that to happen.
SF2 voting breakdown:
Underline for a difference of 9 ranks or more. Poland and Israel have that.
No notable changes between the two systems.
Interestingly, Ukraine isn't the winner of this semi; Australia is. The jury even put Belgium above Ukraine.
Georgia and Israel were saved by the jury, while Poland was saved by the public. The indifference towards Poland by the juries and Israel by the public is apparent.

also Sweden was pretty bad and I'm surprised it placed as high as it did
Sweden should've gone with Kizunguzungu lol. (My personal pick is Constellation Prize btw.)Also, whoops: Danish Jury B ranked the entries in the reverse order, thus putting Australia last in her rankings while the other 4 members put Australia first. This is unlikely to be corrected, but even if it does, it won't change the placings, just the number of points. Ukraine's lead over Australia would've been 14 points fewer than how it is now, leaving a 9-point difference between them.
Current points: 12

"Popular bisexual disaster" |
I thought UK Twitter would be really salty as usual, but they are NOTHING, absolutely nothing, in comparison with Russia.
