I have to agree with Aegis. We do not need 100 mainstream songs to be default for DDR; the licensing costs would probably be atrocious, and hardcore players (who carry a fair amount of the series at the moment) will be very turned off! What we need is around 30 licensed songs, including mainstream hits, older songs, licenses from Dancemania (or at least artists popular from it), Eurobeat, and the like. We should also have a fair amount of Konami originals to strengthen the initial list further. Everything else on your list is pretty good, though. To separate the game from Stepmania, an elaborate story mode should be sufficient if done well.

I'm just saying, that's how it would get popular. I know a few casual players, and they never played any of the songs except for the mainstream ones. Even I tend to go towards the mainstream songs on DDR (despite mostly liking alt. music), and only about 20% of Konami songs aren't completely annoying.
I'm not saying this would make you guys happy, but this would make the game much more popular with casual players. But yeah, costs I'm sure would be high for the publisher... that's the only problem I see.

It's the great contradiction. In order to have a casual market really care about a music game, there need to be around 30-60 recognizable licenses at the very least (Rock Band 4 tiptoed that line and barely passed, since several songs weren't recognizable but their artists were; SingStar also went on the low end but charged only budget price for the games). DDR Hottest Party 3 understood this but failed in marketing, which was also necessary to get anywhere. However, KONAMI doesn't see the US as a viable market to invest money in and not just proxy Japan, as evidenced by Jukebeat beginning with some US content and then cutting it off in 2012 along with REFLEC BEAT not getting anything but originals.

DDR is dead.
Here's one I can think of that comes to my mind: DDR Dance Wars for iOS devices, a freemium game where you collect sticker parts to unlock a song fully. For me, it's a great freemium game in iOS phones/pads. It even included a rival battle system where you can steal a sticker of the song you want to have, rivals can do the same thing to you. It's a fun concept. However, The one thing that was absurd was that it had a short lifespan. It could've been a success towards the music mobile game industry but nope, instead Konami has other busy projects they have to focus on, so they decided to pull the plug on this game in August.
*sigh*

I'm genuinely surprised this thread still hasn't been closed yet, after DDR is not dead and Quickman's cool thread.
