I know that in order to successfully run a PS2 emulator on your PC, you need to have the PS2 BIOS file. The only legal way to do this is to dump the BIOS file from your PS2 to the PC, which is apparently a very complicated process over LAN.
However, if you own a PS2, wouldn't it be "technically legal" to just download a BIOS file from the Internet, because you bought a PS2 already from Sony and you should be able to do that? It's just like downloading an MP3 file of a song from the Internet: if you already own a legal copy of it (via a purchase) then it's legal to download it.

To be completely honest, if you bought a PS2 then in my books it's fine to download a BIOS dump since you've already spent the money on it equivalently. Whether that's actually legal, I'm not qualified to say but just like music labels protest ripping discs, I'm sure there is a case to be made against dumping PS2 BIOS.
Bottom line, I'm no legal expert but I'm sure the industry is more concerned with those who download a PS2 BIOS and never bought a system, regardless.

I'm pretty sure that it would be practically fine as long as you have the PS2 known to them as purchased.
