So I came up with an idea that I think would be a really fun contest. For each week, there would be a song selected for the contest. Each person in the contest would need to step that song. Because everybody would be stepping the same song, it would be cool to see how your stepchart compares to someone else's. Each person would vote on the top 3 and say why they voted for those songs. Then if your chart wasnt good, you can look at other people's charts and see what they did to make theirs better.
Tell me if you like the idea

I thought about this idea but it sounds nauseatingly painful because you'd have to hear the same song possibly 20+ times.

Yeah well maybe we could do a qualifier round that would pick the top 10 stepartists. And then we would go from there

That doesn't make it much better. Plus, that would severely limit the competition. Qualifier rounds are supposed to kinda even them out, not bring them down to lows. And it wouldn't work too well for people who are just getting "into" the world of stepcharting. They won't really improve much if they don't have much of a chance to compete.

I don't like the idea.
Simply because you are limiting the creativity of step-charting to just ONE song, you may have step charts mimic certain parts of the song or have different charts that will have varied steps, but nothing too different about it that would really bring out the potential of both a veteran and newcomer step chart artist. Plus, I may like to play the song a bunch of times over and over again, but that's only because I play one single chart. Playing one song with different step charts may not be a lot of people's cup of tea.
The Summer Contests/Winter Contests/songs with lots of variation and selection of songs is essentially the format for simfile contests. Oh, and let's not forget the SRT's (Sight Reading Tournaments).

I could make it 5 songs a week, and they could pick which one

.....I'm not sure you get that the idea IN GENERAL is bad. Even if it was a one week thing I wouldn't really expect a lot of people to jump in on it. I get that you want to make a simfile contest to see which step chart out of one song is the better out of X amount of participating artists, but if all they have to work with is just ONE song, then it's pretty much telling them that they only have one option to work with out of many other options they have the ability to work with and to start out with.
Also, they can vote on the song, but then others will vote on another song they WANT to work with, this thus limits their choice of the song they want to work with, you'll have people complain that they didn't get their pick of song to start out the contest with, etc. etc.
It's a possible situation, but I know for a fact there is always one person who would not want to step this song/participate due to (x) factor.

I saw once this concept in work (it was something in Otaku's Dream community, I don't remember it well). Overall the contest didn't work - it was hard to judge it and wasn't that fun. Also playing same song with slightly different charts 10 times over and over wasn't fun.

Ranking/voting for dozens of simfiles as a judge is hard enough as is when they're all different; being the exact same song would be the most boring and monotonous thing in the world.
Hell go look at the paradise sampler pack a while ago and how many people even cared to look through more than 20% of the pack (spoiler: no one).

As a simfile contest where participants are awarded 1st/2nd/3rd palce ranking? It wouldn't function well. If five participants submitted a simfile with 3 to 6 charts, that means that a person voting will listen to the song from 4 to 24 times!
As a community workshop where members can gain feedback and ideas from others' interpretation? Yes, it would work quite well.
A workshop idea would also allow new simfile authors an opportunity to work on weak areas or to learn from others outside of a competitive atmosphere.

I thought of something. Let's say there was 10 people in the contest. There are 10 songs that will be stepped in the contest. Each person is assigned a song to step so that no one has the same song. Next week, they would submit their song and be assigned the next song to step, and the songs would rotate through so everybody gets to step every song. Then when you vote, there are 10 different songs to vote for.

OK this is my last idea. Instead of everybody doing the same song only 3 other people would have the same song as you. Those 3 people would be different every week. That might work out

Still the same thing. It's one song but 3 people step charting it every week. Unless you meant the song changes every week?

Too limited. The reason the tournament of simfiles that is ending right now is successful is because of the amount of freedom there is, although there are some constraints (that make it fun).

i always thought it would be fun to make a SC theme called [Freezedance] or something of the sort where there are 2 objectives
1. choose a song with an ice/cold theme (frozen songs are outlawed )
2. keep the freeze value in between 2 numbers (for example, keep the freeze between 75 and 100)
also interchangeable with chaos, voltage, stream, and air
