I came across this on YouTube
Games like Rock Band and DDR can be better described as virtual hobbies than video games. They appeal to a wider demographic, but are lacking the imagination and progressive elements that are halmark of more traditional video games. Stating games like this as your favorite form of interactive media, to avid gamers, is about as boring as saying your favorite game is "Tetris". Nothing wrong with enjoying it, but if it's your favorite, it likely means you don't play a wide selection of video games
What do you think? Are we musical gamers progressive? Do we have soul like other gamers?

It's all subjective and personal opinions really, I love music games, but it's not the ONLY type of video game I enjoy.
I play Racing, Fighting, Shooting, Action, Adventure, RPG, Puzzle, whatever kinds of games I can get my hands on. This feels like the guy really only looked at Guitar Hero and DDR's gameplay and thought 'wow, that's it? That's ALL the game has to offer for these gamers?' and called it a day. Rhythm gaming hasn't really changed it's formula for the past decade or so, but it really has given gamers a much more 'different' experience than a standard sit-down linear experience with most games nowadays.
And you can only ask James Brown if we got Soul.

Compared to what? Cause the hot ticket in the gaming market belongs to First Person Shooters. Do we have more soul than FPS games? I'd like to think so. At least the rhythm gaming community knows how to do something unique and original every once in a while instead of rehashing old concepts and plastering on new DLC.Post #4 · Publicado en 2014-07-28 06:06:00am Hace 9.7 años

I keep reading over the original quote and there's something in it that irks me.
Oh wait. I'm sorry. I'm expecting intelligence from a YouTube commenter. My apologies.

Nice job trying to pass off your own ignorant bias as gospel truth. But you're factually incorrect. There's no correlation between having a favorite genre of video game and a lack of experience in other genres. That's like saying "If you like rock, that means you don't like pop". Who are you to say that's true? Where's the evidence that supports that allegation?Oh wait. I'm sorry. I'm expecting intelligence from a YouTube commenter. My apologies.

Everyone is entitled to have their own personal favorite games and genres, and all one really needs to do is worry about what they like to play and enjoy themselves. A simple concept, yet many gamers lack the common sense to grasp it.

I feel like this entire thread can be summed up in one sentence: You can't make radical statements about something you don't understand completely without completely understanding it and every component relevant to the statement. Even though the statement is mostly true for me, I still occasionally enjoy other genres; I just don't do it often because I prefer one genre (rhythm games) over another (i.e. fighting games, racing games, FPS's, etc.). Furthermore, one could easily say the same for FPS fans. It'd still be wrong. Very few genres (if that) can actually apply to the original statement, because the majority of people don't tend to stay exactly within the confines of one genre unless done so unintentionally. What I mean by this is that there are people who don't really ever play video games (particularly those who are older) who will stay with one game (namely fitness-centered games) because either, A: They don't need and/or want to expand outside of one genre or B: they're never exposed to the genre in the first place. So, bottom line, we have as much soul as every other person who plays games for the sake of doing so.

Nothing in gaming ever has one forever.
They'll be cherished, then they'll sink deep...deep...forgotten.

Nah but seriously, music games offer progression. Story modes, different difficulties to pass. It's same like with all other games. Same goes for logic games like Tetris. What's wrong with enjoying some Tetris or Puyo Puyo.
