I honestly don't remember like anything from War Games.
The guidance point might be more valid on a lengthy tournament like the Summer Contest, but for a tournament with 5 rounds, will it really be an issue? I feel like if people see that someone is consistently making DDR edits or doing songs by the same artist, it would tend to effect them negatively in terms of votes anyways,

Except take a look at the track record for the Summer Tournaments and see how many people participate in the first round vs the last round.
You honestly think that's related to the presence of themes and not just that most people didn't see the contest all the way through (myself included)?
I think it plays a part. I know that for myself, I often saw a theme I didn't like or knew I would have a hard time finding a song for and decided to skip the week, only to completely forget about the contest for several weeks after. There's always expected fallout from these tournaments considering the length, but I think it could be lessened.
I understand Pie's point of having all free week, but I did all free week for War Games and was told by many that it made it boring. I like the idea of adding some new themes along with some old ones.
The point of the contests is who is the best simfile artists and bring in new simfile artists to ZIv. Can you call someone the best simfile artists if he just did DDR Edits? Also the themes can make the simfile artist hit new grounds. Some new artists might go "Oh wow making that J-Pop file was fun! I should make more!".

Obviously it's up to the official organizer(s), I'm just giving my personal opinion.

How about you don't announce the theme for the week, and whoever's simfile falls under theme after it is revealed, gets one extra point?
I think it would make for a nice Russian roulette.

Make the theme optional. Every week is free week but if you adhere to the special rules you get a five-point bump.

Five points is too much, especially when you consider the possibility that no will participate in any given week.

*shrugs* Just a thought. One single point isn't likely to change the ranking regardless the combination of valid/invalid entries.

I think that there should be no themes, but if there are themes they should be simple like Licensed Music, BEMANI, DDR Edit, etc.

"TAKING IT TO THE PIE" |
On the topic of new themes I have a good theme we could do:
KONAMI Step Artist - We all pretty much assume that Konami picks the songs them will give a rating to a song before the chart is made (or it seems that way sometimes). Create a pool of songs and then the contestants are randomly assigned one of the songs from the pool. The pool includes step ratings (reasonable) to adhere to. Here me out: I told people at my local arcade, give me a song you want to see an edit of and a rating. They gave me polyrythm - 12 (X-scale). My first edit of only turned out to be a 10. I tweaked it, 11, scrapped it and did it again: 12. The judging could be how well you adhered to the rating. It would be basically like judging Konami charts, we see the rating before the chart then decide if the chart was fun and if it matched the rating.

"X scale 20" |
I thought it would be interesting to have a tournament like this:
1st round: Make a 7 on
2nd round: Make an 8
3rd round: Make a 9
4th round: Make a 10
The song can be whatever, but it has to be the specified difficulty.
