Sorry, BeFan, I didn't mean you, I meant Gabe, upset about his rating again.

I don't even understand why points are a big deal anymore, seeing as you don't get automatically banned for -100.

Points are important because low ratings make people butthurt, much to the amusement of the more senior members.

I'll admit that now that the -100 autoban is gone, I don't see a point in user ratings. It just encourages people to judge at first glance, based upon the red numbers they see, and automatically form a stigma.

There is also the case where people give harsh ratings because they disagree with something someone said; even while they are still within the perameters of a propper post or better yet, outside the perameters of an impropper post.

@Astroman129: I kind of have to agree with this. If someone sees a -50 or something, they tend to judge them more harsher and I must admit I've partially judged people that way from time to time. The red just seems to impact the mood of someone when they look at the post.

@Android: You bring up a good point. It also made me reflect for a moment. Out of all the things the rating system has brought in, it has mostly been various hassles. I quickly devised a pros and cons list in my head and I could really think of many pros this system brought in.

I honestly think just switching to a strike system where each report misconduct when spotted would work better.

There is a strike system in place. Basically, you eff up once, you get one red "X" next to your name (no one can see it, but only you can on your name that sits on the tab section of the site....probably in between the notifications bar and your medal.), you eff up twice, you get a second "X", you eff up to the point where it is insinuating that you WANT to leave or everyone is in agreement that the person is just an utter douchebag or threatens members or anything to a higher degree, they get the third strike and they are out of here. I think admins and mods (or "Staff" as ZIv calls it) are the only ones that can give out strikes AFAIK.

The points system is still used, but it's now more stricter than ever and won't instantly ban you if you get -100, so yes, even somebody that can get a -1000 can still not be banned, unless they REALLY get on the nerves of the members, mods, and admin, they still stay here until then. I do agree that with this system now in place, points are LITERALLY not important anymore, you just don't have to piss off the members + mods + admin and you're straight, yet in the case of Gabe, his reputation pretty much is dragging along with him again (the AgentP account got banned when the -100 insta-ban system was in place), all he needs to do is to try and use some common sense and at the very least TRY and put something useful and thought-provoking into the forums.

So Gabe, don't be a douche again. Pretty pls.

I'm proposing an alternative to the user rating system, because let's face it, that system is bad.

How about rating posts instead? Basically somewhere in the post box there would be "#pts + -". Basically it would be locked to +1 and -1, and ratings aren't inflated nor deflated.

Now, how am I sure this won't cause the same problems as the current system? I'm not actually. It's less likely someone would downvote a post because they are less likely to see someone in the negatives. It gives new members more chances.

Thoughts? Think this is a stupid idea and wish I was dead? Think it's amazing and you love me forever?

One problem would probably be that User Rating would change based largely on number of posts rather than quality of posts. So a person who rarely posts but always has something insightful would have a much lower rating than someone who posts a ton but generally doesnt have much content to their posts.

Not a bad idea though.

Only problem I see is that there might be a certain few people that would rate someone down every single time for no reason. Other than that, all of my this.

Anyway, I'd like to question why the rating system is here in the first place. It bothers me and it seems that even since you don't need -100 to get banned, there's no reason to have it anymore. We should remove it, IMO, because it doesn't really help anyone.

If you need to rely on an arbitrary number to see how popular you are or someone else is, it really shouldn't matter.

People rate others down for no reason already.
