TL;DR: This was uploaded before the deadline, aside from the jacket. I uploaded the wrong file so I had to go fix that. Otherwise it's the same file as what I uploaded before the deadline. Steps, sync, cut are the exact same as before.

So I waited until the last minute to play the Deja Vu files. As a result, I had the votes for last week done at 5 am on Sunday, and I had plans in the late morning/early afternoon so I wouldn't have time to make a file before the deadline if I went to sleep, so I took a skeleton file I had and worked on it. It took me less than an hour to complete, but IMO it's a fun chart!

When I finished the file, I quickly uploaded it and didn't make a post in the thread like I usually do. I was just going to make the post later. But then it was brought to my attention that the jacket was extremely big and corrupted. Turns out I uploaded the audio twice: once in the audio slot where it belongs, and once in the jacket slot Blushing Maybe if I didn't wait to upload at the last minute this wouldn't happen! Laughing Out Loud I know it's past the deadline but since I won't be changing the audio or SM/SSC files, I went ahead and uploaded the jacket and updated the ZIP since it's extremely minor. If you wish to download the jacket, you can just save the jacket and overwrite the incorrect file. Otherwise, if you download it after this post it's good.

Direct link to the jacket (right-click, save link as, save it in the song folder)

I've been told that some people are having issues downloading O/D*20. I've added a custom ZIP now, so if you've been having issues trying to download the file, try that.

It’s because of the asterisk. File names can’t have that character.

Everybody (Backstreet's Back): This is actually the first contest file I've played from you. Unfortunately, you have botched the cut. Or the person that stepped it in a previous Summer Contest did, but you still could've improved on that.

Actually, hooky's cut is a little bit different and doesn't have that jarring cut where it sounds like they forgot to pronounce the "b" in "everybody". Unfortunately the botched cut is from Jared.

Quote: CuzcoBlocko
Also please use .ogg files. Trying to nitpick things in the SM5 editor is a pain because VBR .mp3s don't play well with it.

Or at the very least if you insist on using .mp3s, use a constant bitrate.
The problem with variable bitrates is that if you play the file in the SM editor and you start anywhere in the song other than the very beginning, it throws the entire file off sync and it makes it a lot harder to judge properly. It'll play correctly in a regular playthrough but it's a pain for those of us that want to do a further analysis in the editor.

illuminate: There was one thing I didn't really like: The rhythms during b146-148 and b168-176. I know what you're following but it just didn't feel natural, b146-148 seems more like a solid 16th stream and 168-176... I would've followed the record scratching instead.

b146-148 kinda annoys me a little too, actually. Tongue I guess I just really wanted that part to also have two back-to-back footswitches.
b168-176, I don't agree with following the record scratching at all. The reason I followed the synth in that part is because I continued following that same basic melody once the song returned to 146 BPM. For me it was a matter of consistency (and also the fact that I really just liked how it played).

I'm not usually all that comfortable talking about my own files, but I wanted to specifically address this:

Quote: CuzcoBlocko
The mostly vocal sections such as 100-164 are generally stepped on point, but the more interesting parts of the song such as b68-100 seem to be almost all 4ths. I guess this is the fault of the song more than you but still, jumps at least would've spiced that section up.

For this chart, I tried to avoid going overboard with the difficulty. I figured 192 was already a pretty fast BPM so I didn't wanna get too crazy with the jumps. I decided to just stick with following the percussion line, which for hardtek usually means lots of quarters. I thought it was fine, but I can definitely see how that can get boring after a while, and you're right, maybe more jumps would have helped that. I was actually worried about karaoke stepping the vocals, especially at the end there, so I'm glad you ended up liking that. All in all, maybe I should stop trying to play so conservatively: I've consistently gotten votes in the lower teens this contest, which is great and I'm very thankful, but if I wanna get on the leaderboard next year it looks like I'm gonna have to step it up a bit.

Anywho, thanks for the feedback Cuzco, even after doing this for over a year I'm still learning with every new file I put out. Which is good! I think...

I got a chance of being VIP? HYPE.

Also Cuzco, pitch relevancy isn’t really a thing in my files because I’m not sure how it’d work in DDR; I mean, I kinda get how it’d work in a game with more “buttons” such as IIDX or Pop’n but not as much as DDR only has 4 arrows. Could you perhaps explain it?

It's simple: Higher notes I tend to step with up, even higher notes I use crossovers for, "middle notes" and low notes either go to left/right (middle column) or down. b109-113 in Gloss showcases an example of this. You can also just use simple LDUR/RDUL staircases if there is a string of notes you're following that increase in pitch (or LUDR/RUDL if they're decreasing in pitch). I've found this to be somewhat aesthetically pleasing all the way back in January 2016.

You can't really do it for every note, however. In my files, some high notes end up being down or low notes end up on up, primarily to keep up the flow of the file. And because sometimes keeping up pitch relevancy at all times won't work:

http://orig06.deviantart.net/d4cf/f/2016/006/1/8/2016_01_06_171715_by_rusty_raccoon_735-d9n0br2.jpg

This was something I attempted to do as pitch relevancy, but was quickly told not to do it.

Quote: Gameoson
When you use pitch relevancy in a pad file, remember not to get too crazy with pitch relevancy. It doesn't need to be a super strict representation of the ups and downs of a song (this is what keyboard files are for), it just needs to kinda feel the song. The pattern you posted looks like it's trying way too hard to be pitch relevant. It looks messy and gross. Even if you do eventually spin around and face the screen again, it's a really ugly pattern that would put the player in a really awkward position, and most players would just double-step instead of spin. As for being a low BPM, well... a low BPM shouldn't be used as an excuse to make awkward patterns. If END OF THE CENTURY was only 100 BPM instead of 170 it would still be a bad stepchart.

And I realized in my personal experience they're right: I don't enjoy 270s that much, especially if the file expects you not to doublestep. I use this technique to pad many spins on a sightread and it wasn't really working for 270s in my opinion. The main reason I did it was because of using wired headphones most of the time.

That being said, other people seem to like them so I wouldn't call throwing this pattern in your files an instant 0/<9 points.

Feraligatr has decided to step down from the contest, leaving his VIP spot open. The VIP will still be top 15 and with the winners of each week clinching a spot. In other words, an extra spot has opened for people to get into the VIP room. If you're on the outside looking in, this might help out your chances.

Ah, Cuzco, thanks for that explanation! I'll try to perhaps experiment with that in upcoming files.

The spreadsheet says I voted, but I did not see my votes factored in under my column. Dont think it'd really change the standings though

EDIT: okay they're there, but under the wrong person's name? (Mr. M)

That's because I put your votes in the wrong column. Laughing Out Loud They were there and factored in, just in the wrong spot.

EDIT: Fixed, also hid non-voters like I was supposed to.

EDIT EDIT: SLIGHT UPDATE, I forgot Tikal's +2 for Amsterdam when tallying up the votes. HDM300 now placed 11th this round while KevinRocker placed 10th and earned a single point.

This likely won't mean much of anything as I'm pretty sure the VIPs remain the same regardless.

There's still the VIP Room but I kinda want vincent to confirm the point totals (since he's been doing that the whole contest) before confirming who's in the VIP Room.

No, we now enter VIP rounds. Only the top 15 advance to this (along with people who won a week) and it lasts 3 weeks. All weeks are free weeks.

"Pancakes!"
I added up the points and it seems the top fifteen include two who scored 14 points but ledgam3r1279 won a week and is not in the top 15. Do both hypnoticmarten and tamtamino move on, making it a 16 entry VIP or what?

As we wait for the fancy graphics, here's the top 15 and first place winners. I added the points for week 10 based on the last score image by vincent, and I factored the dropout. Italics are those that won a spot via winning a week.

Gameoson - 134
DigitalBasic - 84
ohaiimian - 79

TikalFan9000 - 77
Daffa212162 - 74
ddrstepper - 59

djVERTICAI - 52
DDRDAIKENKAI - 51
Pandemonium X - 42
Feraligatr - 30
hooky - 26
HealingDMax300 - 16
CuzcoBlocko - 15
vincentw - 15
hypnoticmarten77 - 14
tamtamino - 14
ledgam3r1279 - 12

Thank you for waiting, here is the final pre-VIP leaderboard! (click for 1080p)

- If your name is in bold or is highlighted, then congratulations for making it into the VIP Room!
- Since there's a tie for 15th place, I asked Pandy and he said that both should be allowed in.
- Commiserations to 01angel who missed by a mere point. You'll get there next time!

Alright, submissions for the VIP Room are now open! If your name is in bold or highlighted on vincentw's graphics, you can submit your Round 1 files starting now. Good luck!

As a reminder, this is the formatting when uploading your VIP submissions:
[VIP Room Round #] - SONG TITLE (So for example, [VIP Room Round 1] - A Sunset Cat and a Tin Robot)

Anyways, on to my first VIP entry!

Color Pulse / Off the Hook

Beginner 1/1 Light 3/4 Standard 5/7 Heavy 7/9 Challenge 9/12

If you've ever played Splatoon 2, you'll instantly recognize Color Pulse as the song Pearl and Marina (the two members of Off the Hook, obviously) perform during every Splatfest. Speaking of which, I've actually had this file planned since the beginning of June - it's just a coincidence that there was actually a Splatfest yesterday. Tongue

Don't bother trying to figure out what the heck the lyrics are. It's neither English nor Japanese. Canonically it's meant to be the Inkling & Octarian languages. In actuality it's completely random gibberish and isn't intended to mean anything.
