Beatmania - Playstation 1 query

Hi guys,

Iv just completed my collection of PS1 Beatmania titles - and now want to play them, but dont have a PS1.

1. If I buy a Japanese PS2 with backward compatibility, can I still load the Append discs ok?
2, Will my DJ Dao work on these games or do I need to use my DJ station pro? Ideally, id like to use my dao, but i remember hearing that only 6thmix + core remix work with the KOCs and not the earlier games.

Append discs work fine on PS2s just as they did with the PS1. IIDX controllers work with all beatmania games IICR. The difference is that there's no native IIDX KOC support for them meaning you have to manual set the buttons manually. Once you do they will work just fine.

I only have a key disc (6th+Core), but I'd imagine the append disc system should still work on a JPS2. After all, traditional multi-disc PSX games work fine on the PS2 (although I cannot think of any that could only be started from the first disc...).

I'm under the impression that the controller support is based on which key disc you used (as I figure the program is loaded from the key disc, and remains running when you switch discs). But this is conjecture. I've never gotten around to getting any other BM games.

I mean I play the older bestmanias with my KOC pad completely fine the only issue is the 5 keys I need to used are the first 5 when flipped into right handed scratch mode leaving a 2 key gap which gets a bit confusing when playing at times. If a dao has the same mapping’s I can’t think why it wouldn’t work but if it’s a regular controller anyway you can just manually map each key as was said earlier I’m sure.

Thanks guys for the info - ill give it a shot with the JP PS2 using the core remix key disc which sounds like I can also use my DAO with. Only issue is my scratch is P1 whereas the PS1 beatmanias are all mapped on the IIDX P2 side.......hopefully wont be an issue after a few rounds

I don’t know which ones but I know some of the ps1 games lets you change the scratch side, particularly with 6th and core which outright supports IIDX controllers properly. It might be the only one with left hand scratch but I feel like there’s at least one other out there?

I think the sound of Tokyo may have had this option? I'll let you guys know in a week once I get a new jp ps2.
The ps1 games were quite average in comparison to the ps2 IIDX ports, but I've been tempted to play them again.

As far as I know, only 6th Mix & CORE lets you change the 1P turntable side among the CS beatmania games.

I had to do this in the arcade version because of how much more used to IIDX I was when I played it down the shore one summer.

6th mix + core remix has the most customization options of any 5 key cs game, and it has a great song list as well. The one downside is that when using as a key disc, you can't disc swap more than once. This means you need to reload the key disc every time you want to change mixes. It also means that you won't be able to access bonus edit mode. It's worth it to get the 2 disc "first mix" for that. They usually go for pretty cheap.
