It seems speculations about the game's future has come full circle ever since being strangely missing from this year's KAC. REFLEC BEAT 悠久のリフレシア has been confirmed by Konami as the last version of the game. Citing that the team has reached the absolute limits of what can they achieve in its gameplay. Kinda odd thing to say considering how some games hasn't done anything new in years. Anyways, RIP REFLEC BEAT. We may still see songs revived for 悠久のリフレシア but that's the last version of RB we will ever see. On the mobile side, it would be nice to end the game by releasing any songs not yet on the app but that's asking for too much.

Reflec Beat; The Reflesia of Eternity was the worst version of the game, not surprised.

Well, that's a bummer. Pretty sad to be honest, and thanks for the source.

RB in their groovin'/VOLZZA time was one of the Bemani game with most support and one of the best song list, tied with IIDX. Speaking about his Reflesia iteration, i just don't understand the "revamp" if they gonna cut it off (dude, even for KONAMI standards, this was the most dumbest move in management i've seen ... why you redo a game from scratch if you gonna left in the dust). Also, i don't understand the part of "reach the limit of the game" ... hell, is a game with a touch screen: you can do a lot of interesting patterns to keep the game alive.

I agree with the part of this version was one of the worst, but with a little effor maybe they can just kept the game alive. I suppose with this news, maybe TOTTO will move to sound direct DANCE RUSH, or he will be participating in SDVX with the other half of the Bemani artists (god, i hate this game and the fact for KONAMI's eyes this is the only game they will full support until the end of the days).

Also ... MUSECA is also mentioned in the article: It suffers the same destiny of RB or they wrote something different?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Oh my god noooo. I hope this doesn't mean that RB plus is getting the axe too. I've been worried about that. So much great music comes from the RB series. Cry

REFLEC BEAT didn't die naturally. It was murdered by KONAMI.

Before Reflesia, you had a game that was one of the higher PASELI earners (according to Aaron In Japan, who certainly knows his stuff), with a wide ranging and overall excellent songlist and fun mechanics. Then they saw the waves Chunithm was making, and decided to graft mechanics similar to that on to a game where they don't fit. You know, rather than offering your original product that's actually really good as it is, and is making you money, you could completely change it up to copy what, for all you know, could die off any time.

And for all the benefits the triple-wide objects and Switch Longs bring, they really aren't that... well, REFLEC. Two more straight-down object types make it less like the seemingly-chaotic game of dynamic note movement you know, and more like just another touch screen game. Of course, this was at the expense of slides, a Chunithm-like mechanic that actually meshes well with the rest of the game's mechanics. This would be at least acceptable if there were good charts that apply the new mechanics well. There aren't. In fact, the charting took a nosedive since the sublime output of VOLZZA 1/2. Song charts are far less distinct, and far less fun to play, with a style encouraging more rigid hand position, which is about as anti-REFLEC as you can get.

So why not play the old charts more? Because they're not even in the game anymore - at least, not initially. As part of their ass-backwards decision to remove slides, they somehow saw fit to remove almost the entire songlist (and an excellent songlist it was too) and drip feed it back in little by little, as if it's new content that they had to work hard to remake. In fact, most charts are identical to their pre-Reflesia versions, especially those added later on. Sure, there's maybe the odd new object added here and there, but that's not worth holding certain songs back for nearly a year. This must have gone some way to alienating a player base (that we've established the game already had), to go from "top earner" to "discontinued" in little over a year.

Some other gripes:
- There's so much good music in this game, continuing the REFLEC tradition. Shame it's all going to disappear and be forgotten pretty soon.
- Easing the timing difficulty feels like a cheap way to mask the charting jank.
- The 1-15 scale is bad. The old scale could use some slight restructuring, but the difficulty expansion seems to have been mostly at the lower levels which is wholly unnecessary (I'd say the change should be at the upper end).

TL;DR - fuck KONAMI, fuck bandwagonry, fuck greed, REFLEC deserved a better company.

It really is a shame, because RB has always given us some absolutely banger tracks (Diamond Dust, Daily Lunch Special, Valanga, Chirality just to name a few of my faves).
When Yoshitaka was sound directing it looked like such a weird concept, with semi-randomized two-player air hockey-esque gameplay, but then TOTTO came along and literally changed the game. Like Konami seemed to be hyping this game up, groovin'!! and Upper were huge, and then VOLZZA kinda fizzled out and VOLZZA 2 didn't help much. Reflesia had so much potential, and I was really hoping the series would continue for at least a few more installments. I'll be really sad to see Reflec go. Here's hoping that they port all the remaining exclusive songs to a different game like they did with BeatStream (though that's quite a long shot, but can't hurt to dream, can it?)

For more context: the source is BEMANI Pia, a book sold at JAEPO to celebrate the series' 20th anniversary. Contains interviews, etc. and will be coming to bookstores and online stores after the event. It seems there's a session where game staff answer a number of template questions, and this page is a part of that.

Mind this isn't a formal "service will be terminated" announcement, but it's still from an official source. The game probably still have a few months of life left to tie up loose ends. Probably.

I hope the game will get an offline kit when its time is up, would be a damn shame if a game of years age just get grounded to dust. I also wonder whether Reflesia songs from last year will get OST release or not.

Also, the tone of MSC Q&A in that book is generally more positive than Reflec, but, uh, that game is also missing from KAC and is performing even worse than Reflec so I'm sure it will die soon too.

"What If You Had A Gun?"
Then you'd only be able to play versions that work without needing to be online (which, IIRC, is just the original and Limelight).

Yeah, limelight was the last game before the forced online mandate.

The original REFLEC BEAT through groovin'!! has one of the best soundtracks of any BEMANI series (only behind IIDX, IMO), and the original game mechanics are super fun. I wish it had a chance in US Round 1, but sadly that will never happen now...

Just thought I'd add my $0.02 into this.

I think it's high time that people should archive as many songs and charts as humanly possible (on a simulator of course)...given that it hasn't been worked on earlier. If REFLEC BEAT is going to go by the waste-side, I think it's a dead given that this is what we need to do (outside of grabbing the games offline...but you know...probably subjective to consider that).

Honestly I'm at this point that video game preservation is one of the most important things we need to do in an era where games are being digitally removed. I can list some examples just from the past few weeks; like Tales of Link, Gran Turismo 6 online services, the entire Transformers franchise on Steam. I can go on about piracy becoming a necessary evil to combat this issue of killing video game history but like I said, that's very dangerous territory.

Just some food for thought here. Either archive everything ever made on a REFLEC BEAT simulator or go on a REFLEC BEAT pirate frenzy. Nothing else we consumers can do...when sometimes we just have to clean up the filth that the game industry throws at us. Confused

This is something I didn't even think of. I was hoping it would finally come to Round 1 so I could play it in person and not on my phone, since visiting Japan would never happen. This is so sad, it actually had some kind of legacy, as opposed to BeatStream.

Round 1 got DEA after the game was ended so it can happen. Provided Reflesia or preferably Volzza 2 gets sent over. I'd rather have Volzza 2 anyways.

Yeah they're gonna discontinue app service ASAP, they killed Gitadora CS and Pop'n rhythmin the same way. Is there a way I can refund my purchases before the app gets shut down?

It'd still be able to be played prior to discontinuation but you probably wouldn't be able to get new content for it.

IIRC, people were able to request refunds from Konami for purchases made on GITADORA. I'd hope this will be the same.
