"five minute white boy challenge"
Informative thread.

It's a simfile making contest. If you like simfiles, yes, if you don't, no.

Approximately nobody asked for this song to be included. Least popular decision by the Japanese since Nintendo released the Wii U.

Simfile Showcase is just a group for sharing simfiles and simfile packs. Technical Showcase is the contest targeted toward the ITG timing attack scene.

And yeah, it is pretty heavily ITG biased, since most of the members prefer that stepping style. If you post easier or DDR-oriented files, you may get a lot of feedback you weren't looking for, but the people there are generally friendly and just want to be helpful :P

So pretty much a 50/50 then eh? I'll put that page on the back burner for now.

Thanks for the 411.

Slightly off-topic, but can I ask what the differences are between DDR and ITG stepping styles? Just curious since it was brought up multiple times here.

"""correct""" ITG style stepping tends to map arrows more directly to the music and sounds in the song used. You'll also see more technical elements in general, although this of course varies from file to file. Ambiguity and double stepping is also usually a lot more frowned upon, compared to DDR style charts.

"bing bong"
DDR style charts were originally based around dance moves and patterns, which is why a lot of the old charts do not follow a particular rhythm to the song and rather just make up a rhythm that tends to complement the song. Double-stepping was also very common in old DDR charts, partly because that was how you were meant to play the game (by using one foot to hit multiple arrows in a row), and partly because the steppers didn't know what they were doing. DDR stepping style has changed quite a bit from the old style, shifting more toward following the rhythms in the song note for note, but most charts still have their own unique rhythm to them. DDR stepping style has shifted considerably toward how ITG stepping has been, mainly since most of the people who still play DDR are skilled players that want a challenge. However there are still very different styles.

A key difference (imo) is sightreadability. ITG offers plenty of clean charts without ambiguity as to which foot you are supposed to hit each arrow with, while DDR has plenty of ambiguous patterns, where you won't be able to know if a certain pattern is a crossover or a footswitch or a doublestep until you've played the chart a few times.

I've also noticed that DDR charts are a lot more dynamic, with a variety of different rhythms and patterns, ranging in difficulty. For example, many DDR 18s have break sections that, by themselves, would just be around 13 to 15 on the difficulty scale. ITG charts tend to be more structured and consistent, with similar patterns and difficulty throughout the entire song.

If you really wanna see the difference between DDR and ITG stepping styles, check out two charts for the same song, one being a DDR chart and one being ITG-styled. For example, by comparing On the Break Heavy from DDR X and SM MaxX's ITGish Challenge chart from Amperage, you can clearly see some of the differences between DDR and ITG charts.
