Unfortunately, even if they know that not all players want only more licenses, the majority either do, or are fine to see more of it. And I can say that almost everyone I saw who played the game (and especially those were first trying it out) play those kinds of songs. Myself included.

This is true for a majority of other games. Newer players would rather play songs they are familiar with rather than go into unfamiliar territory. It's also how they keep the pull/stay factor in these games.

I'm okay with this because I still heavily follow Touhou/Vocaloid/Anime licenses.

This kinda showcases what I believe to be the Groove Coaster series' biggest weakness: if you're not on board with one of the most heavily-heated song license genres, you won't be interested in playing quite the large chunk of songs by default. See for example a person like me that, while being ok with Touhou playable songs, I despise the Vocaloid stuff with every ounce of my body... and that automatically rules me out from the series' biggest genre to date. (...no seriously, the Vocaloid genre has more songs than any of the other genres, even the Original stuff!)

Once again, my biggest complaint so far is in the DLC pricing. It's still not clear on whether Extra modes from the arcades are available or not and you already go shouting that the game's gonna have more expensive DLC song lots when compared to the mobile game? Give me a break...

People have been leaving complaints on the GC Twitter regarding the price.

They're open to hearing feedback. Hopefully, they will copy the mobile version and do song packs to lower the cost.

Another option people have suggested (which I would personally despise, but would make sense because of the weekly online activation DRM) would be a subscription service. Unlike Infinitas, however, at least everyone in the world would easily be able to pay for it. I'd still rather keep the songs I paid for, so I'm hoping for the song packs.

Taito announced today that early adopters will get Bad Apple as a bonus song for free. You have until July 23rd to get it.

https://steamcommunity.com/games/744060/announcements/detail/1685918319456581384

Still wish we got actual song packs like the mobile version, but at least I'll only have to spend $26 instead of $28. ^^;

Uhhh... sooo... Anyone here have a monitor that can swivel so you can play the game in TATE mode? I just remembered I did, so I'll have to give it a try once it's out. Tongue

That's not surprising, considering this game is based off of GC3's interface (though with 4's rating system).

I'm gonna guess it's still gonna require you to get S on all 3 difficulties to unlock them for songs that have Extra. >>

Ohey, we have our first review of the game:

https://www.bemanistyle.com/review-groove-coaster-pc/

I'll most likely write my own review once I play it, but I'm sure it's probably going to sound similar to this one. >>

Seems like it is just 2 more days till it will be released. I was already wondering how the dual flicks would work, but it seems like it has (steam) controller support. I was already wondering whether they would use the mouse or something else :O

Yep!

And I believe they showed how it would work in all controller configs (keyboard has WASD and IJKL for the directions, the analog sticks for the PS4/Xbone controllers, and the Steam controller is self-explanatory).

I've heard there are people/companies already wanting to make AC-style controllers, and I would imagine those would be very cheap compared to similar ones for other games!

Welp, we're off to a good start already; the game doesn't recognize I have an Xbox One controller, and there's no way to manually enable it. :/

Also, TATE mode doesn't work. :/ I've restarted the game, kept the ratio to 16:9 and changed the orientation to Portrait mode, and all it does is narrow the menus and gameplay in Landscape mode...

I asked Degica if the build we're playing is from before AX, because we've seen footage that TATE mode is possible. >>

Someone on Steam was telling me, "your photos still show your monitors in horizontal, yet you want to play vertical." , but I don't think that simpleton realizes that the way to make sure portrait mode works is if the game starts facing eastward or westward and not downward like it does in Landscape mode. To emphasize this, I took some more pictures with my monitor in TATE mode to prove to that person that the game doesn't have a magical motion detector that automatically puts the game vertically. :/

UPDATE: I had a gut feeling Degica was going to suggest I had to tweak the monitor's settings to portrait mode, but it feels needlessly redundant you have to do that just to play GC in the proper aspect ratio, and have to change it back to Landspace when you're finished! Especially when we've had plenty of vertical shooters that simply let you rotate the screen in their settings menu.

Even Degica's own ports (like Mushihimesama here) lets you rotate the screen in-game!

ngl, it's been frustrating af that this game doesn't work properly without having to tweak settings outside of the game (enabling Big Picture mode for controller support, and having to manually rotate the screen in Windows to get portrait mode to work properly).

Sad to hear that, what's your specs? for me, i played a little bit and i enjoyed the entire experience. The songlist is pretty good and the flexibility of the interface is awesome. I have a little complain about two things: The poor button configuration, and how the DLC will cost. Besides that, is a cool game for a fair initial price.

-sigh- say my specs is not good either...

Win10 x64, 4GB RAM, Intel Core i3 M370 @ 2.4GHz, Intel HD Graphics (yea... NO VIDEO CARD m8) with 64MB VRAM, DirectX 12
NOTE: I can't update BIOS 'cause my battery is dead. It requires a certain percentage of battery for update, sadly.

Now that I could finally play the game without crap going wrong, I can finally write a proper "review" for this game.

I've been playing the mobile version ever since the very first game came out on iOS about 7 years ago, and I've played the AC versions ever since Round1 started receiving cabinets. I've put a lot of time and money into both versions because of the series' "easy to learn, hard to master" controls, and the massive-yet-quirky songlist whose original songs remind me of the classic Bemani games, back when it wasn't 95% Hardcore/EDM.

So, when I got word that we were getting a "CS" version of GC on Steam, I was excited because of two reasons:
1. When you play the AC versions, it's very hard to go back to the mobile versions when you have to deal with a small screen and no physical buttons, especially for harder songs that call for rapid-fire taps and swipes.

2. This would be a "happy medium" for me because, if this game was made correctly, this would be the perfect way to play all of the series' songs and get practice when I'm not able to go to my local Round1, especially when it comes to venturing outside of songs and charts I'm familiar with in the mobile versions.

I had high hopes for this game, especially when I saw that the interface was based off of GC3, and had 4's new 1-15 difficulty scale. Does this game fulfill my wishes of a legal way to play the AC version at home?

In short... yes and no.

Let's start with the positives. The interface is basic, but it's very simple to navigate where you need to go, because the song selection, shop, and even the options menus, are technically all in one screen; you just have to hit right to get to the other options.

Another plus is that, for the first time ever, you can play Extra charts without having to go to the arcade! This is a huge plus, if only for the fact that you can actually practice the songs and not have to rely on memorizing youtube videos of Godlike people playing them perfectly.

And lastly, you can play the game in TATE mode for the full arcade experience*!

You might be wondering why I placed the asterisk right there. That's because when I've seen footage of people playing the game with AC-like dimensions, I was led to believe that you could easily go to the options menu and rotate the screen, just like with the home ports of a lot of vertical shooters, including Degica's ports. Unfortunately, that's not the case; in order for Portrait mode to work properly, you have to set it that way through Windows or your monitor's settings. This is super tedious when we've had numerous vertical-oriented games that allowed you to rotate the screen in-game, and nothing more.

But, that's minor compared to some irritating glitches I've encountered, particularly with my Xbox One controller. Word of warning, this game WILL NOT enable controller support out of the box, like with most modern games through the past decade; In order to get it to work, you need to enable Big Picture mode, and pray that the game won't freak out and either endlessly scroll up, or have half the face buttons not work at all.

Through trial and error, I found quick fixes (i.e., unplug your controller while the game is booting up, and re-plug it in when you're in the menu, or, flick on the analog sticks if some of the buttons don't work), but I can't help but think this game wasn't exactly made with regular controllers in mind.

Speaking of which, when the controllers do work, it's an enjoyable, yet sometimes-awkward, experience. the timing is noticeably more strict compared to the mobile and AC versions, but you get used to it very quickly... that is, until you play songs rated 10-15, where you have double-slides that demand very specific directions, and/or rapid-fire taps mixed with swipes. It's doable, but at the same time, it's highly recommended you either have a Steam controller, or an AC-style homebrew controller for this game, because it's very tough when you have controllers that weren't made for this type of game in mind.

However, the biggest problem I have with this game, above all else? It's very, very light on content. With only 31 songs (32 if you got the game early) at launch, and 4 to unlock, you don't have a lot to play with, even when you've unlocked all the charts for each one. Top that with the fact that there's no form of mission mode for single-player and no multiplayer a la the AC version, and it will be very hard to play the game for more than 30 minutes casually.

Degica and Taito announced that they will release DLC throughout the year, at various price points; for August's DLC, you have a pack of 4 (or 3 if you, again, adopted this game early) Touhou songs. That's all fine and good, except this isn't an all-in-one pack like it is on mobile; You have to pay $1.99 USD for each song, a la carte. If Taito and Degica expects to get the amount of fans the mobile and AC versions have, and to (especially) keep them engaged, they need to give us a lot more songs, and at a cheaper price, and they need to do this now.

Specifically, they need to take a page from DJMAX Respect's handbook and offer giant DLC song packs of most of (if not all of) GC's games through the years at, say, $20 apiece. I would gladly pay for stuff like that, especially if they also include themes from the past AC games, maybe include unlockable titles/navigators/sound fx packs like in the AC games.

If I were to give this game a score right now, as it is, I would give this a 6 out of 10. The game's technical hiccups can be patched up, and hopefully they will give us more modes and options (both technical and customization-wise), but if this game wants to achieve greatness at the levels of it's AC and Mobile brethren, they need to give us a lot more content, and they need to do it fast!
